<
dskuza>
so, who here's a fan of functional programming? xP
<
dskuza>
if it sucks, then i'll drop out like i did with college the first time
<
devyn>
looks cool, dskuza
<
dskuza>
well that's a start haha
<
joelteon>
h-hi guys
<
joelteon>
first time i've seen people talking here in a long time
<
dskuza>
what's upppppp
<
dskuza>
i'll never leave!
<
devyn>
joelteon: I-It's not like I'm doing this for you… b-b-baka!

waka-waka-waka-waka-waka
<
dskuza>
i'm kind of excited to "relearn" me a haskell
<
dskuza>
used it for one course in uni, granted, I didn't go to that class more than 4 days out of the year
<
dskuza>
but i tried learning it outside of class.
<
dskuza>
moving from OOP to FP was…amazing, nonetheless.
<
dskuza>
haven't used a functional language in 2 years I think? lost the mindset.
<
devyn>
it's so nice to be able to write things and have the compiler tell you everything that's wrong
<
devyn>
it's hard to do that in imperative langs
<
dskuza>
devyn: I can't wait for the compiler to yell at me all the time, then :o)
<
dskuza>
(un)related: how stupid/genius is it to attempt writing an emulator in a functional language?
<
dskuza>
e.g an NES emu in haskell? xP
<
dskuza>
I know it's been done…
<
joelteon>
it's turing complete
<
joelteon>
also, my new thing is idris
<
joelteon>
its weird af
<
dskuza>
stupid/genius. i don't know which i'd classify it as?
<
dskuza>
simply because I don't know how difficult FP will be for me
<
joelteon>
you're gonna like the way you code...I guarantee it
<
dskuza>
man, I really need to go back and learn the fundamentals of CS again as well
<
joelteon>
even though men's wearhouse is definitely the bottom of the barrel, clothing wise
<
dskuza>
is the frown for my statement or yours haha
<
dskuza>
but you'll like the way you look!
<
dskuza>
they even guarantee it!
<
joelteon>
what happens if i don't
<
dskuza>
then you shit on the suit you rented and give it back with a frown on your face
<
dskuza>
excessive?
<
dskuza>
i miss elliottcable :(
<
joelteon>
ugh, christ
<
joelteon>
i think it's about time to look for another job
<
dskuza>
i agree with that
<
joelteon>
boy i hope i don't get in trouble for saying that
<
joelteon>
dskuza: i work for godaddy
<
joelteon>
so i've been working on cleaning up our APIs for a long time
<
joelteon>
and making them usable to the outside world
<
joelteon>
so i've been thinking "yeah, maybe we can improve godaddy's public perception a little bit"
<
joelteon>
because they recently got less gross in their advertising campaigns
<
joelteon>
they unveiled our new new branding campaign a few weeks ago which will be going out soon
<
joelteon>
and it's just another embarrassing chapter in the embarrassing history of godaddy
<
joelteon>
and it made me realize that maybe making my life's work at this company is not a good idea
<
dskuza>
i mean, one probably wants to be proud of where the work for, rather than just saying "oh, it's a job…"
<
joelteon>
at the time i got the job it would have been stupid not to take it
<
joelteon>
but i'm definitely thinking differently about it now
<
dskuza>
same boat here, despite a short 1.5 year lifespan w/ the company
<
dskuza>
(also it's a startup, so a bit different vs a large entity like you)
<
dskuza>
cheers to rethinking our current career opportunities!
<
joelteon>
startups aren't so bad
<
joelteon>
even if it crashes and burns, it's still a startup
<
dskuza>
truth be told i've never asked myself whether or not godaddy had an api :X
<
joelteon>
its huge dude

we have like 50
<
joelteon>
and they're all terrible
<
dskuza>
"and they're all terrible"
<
dskuza>
the best kind of API
<
joelteon>
they're soap, but not the good kind of soap
<
dskuza>
the kind of soap that somehow makes you feel dirtier?

Cheery>
I just studied eclipse and found sparrows flying out of your arse -sort of bad things.
<
Cheery>
were trying to check the idea behind how static typing helps in refactoring
<
Cheery>
it's related to large project organization of sort
<
Cheery>
the person I heard the idea from claimed that any nontrivial project basically requires that kind of widely spreading refactorings
<
Cheery>
to develop on
