<ec> cloudhead: i use iShows / Trakt.tv
<ec> or is it Trak.tv
<ec> i can never remember
<cloudhead> ah ok
<ec> cloudhead: how's your life
<ec> r u v code rn?
<ec> I haven't ben code in long time
<ec> realized i care very little about any code that isn't paws, and paws is dead
<ec> so now i'm in school for math
<cloudhead> hmm
<cloudhead> my life is alright
<cloudhead> I stopped working for other people
<ec> oooo
<cloudhead> I started enjoying code again
<ec> now you work exclusively for aliens and dogs and dog-aliens?
<cloudhead> I'm doing exclusively haskell now
<ec> ew
<cloudhead> yes, precisely
<cloudhead> no I work for myself only
<cloudhead> haskell's the only language that doesn't make me want to strangle kittens

<alva> i wish it was more usable for things i like. but rust isn't half bad.
<jfhbrook> I've hated my job for at least a few months now
eligrey has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<pikajude> i've hated my job since we picked up node
<jfhbrook> the job hunt is ultra depressing because so far everything sucks just as much
<pikajude> yep
<pikajude> it's quite depressing
<jfhbrook> as you may have gathered I work in node and I'm mostly okay with that
<jfhbrook> preferable to java, at least
<jfhbrook> probably
<jfhbrook> it's less the java and more the dogmatic oop from ultra-stale megacorps that I worry about
<jfhbrook> anyways, part of the problem is because I know javascript everyone assumes I would be qualified, much less want, to do front-end, and that I would be disqualified from doing backend
<jfhbrook> and the backend is what I want to do
<jfhbrook> so it's incredibly frustrating
eligrey has joined #elliottcable
<pikajude> really? that's bizarre
<pikajude> I thought node.js developer was the only job left
<alva> there's no shortage of c/c++ stuff
<jfhbrook> I'm too stupid for c/c++
<jfhbrook> just straight up, my mind is too feeble
<jfhbrook> I've accepted that
<jfhbrook> pikajude, a lot of that stuff is "full stack" and just uses node to do server-side rendering of data from the "real backend"
<jfhbrook> and most "serious backend" people won't touch javascript with a 30 foot pole if only because they're "too good" for node
<jfhbrook> y'know, "not a real language" and all that other bullshit
<jfhbrook> there are reasons to not use node but being an asshole about chosen language is, well
<jfhbrook> it's being an asshole
<jfhbrook> ...except for ruby or java ;D but seriously
<alva> i thought i knew c++ but it's one of those things where the more you know, the more you know that you don't know... or something
<alva> c is at least small.

<cloudhead> alva: jfhbrook: find a platform you enjoy working with and then get a job doing that?
<cloudhead> not disagreeing that the industry is depressing though
<cloudhead> but I've usually been able to work with the technologies I wanted to
<cloudhead> the depressing part was the business and social side

<alva> cloudhead: kind of stuck at my current job doing embedded/mobile dev, because of visa, but it couldbe worese. i think this is what i enjoy the most, even if i'd like the option of doing it elsewhere.
<alva> i also can't spell
<cloudhead> gotcha
<cloudhead> pikajude: I think most people make a bigger deal out of it than need be
<cloudhead> you only need to know the basic ones
<cloudhead> linked lists, trees, binary trees, hash maps
<cloudhead> and basic operations like insert/delete
<cloudhead> and also how to flatten them, ie traverse them
<cloudhead> (I'm talking about interviews)
<cloudhead> you could get a copy of Algorithms by Sedgewick if you're super serious about it
<cloudhead> that's the best book I know of
<cloudhead> but it's almost 1000 pages

<pikajude> cloudhead: i see
<pikajude> i mean, they did tell me to study for the phone interview, and i didn't, and they skipped the 2nd one because of how well i did
<pikajude> so i might be blowing it
<pikajude> (out of proportion)
