<jfhbrook> pikajude you're a facebro right? what do you use insteada slack?
<pikajude> jfhbrook: does that have a negative connotation
<pikajude> also, we use messenger
<jfhbrook> good question, I don't think so
<jfhbrook> an old roommate used to call the product facebro and called being friends on fb facebros
<jfhbrook> and I liked it so I kept it up lol
<pikajude> yeah, turns out fb has a pretty useful messaging service that we can just borrow
<jfhbrook> anyway pikajude I got a recruitermail for some kinda SRE looking team and they said new york was a possibility
<pikajude> oh ok
<pikajude> well if you do end up with faceboo
<pikajude> k
<jfhbrook> so like, probably not gonna reply but might reply? there was a linked blog post that looked interesting but also really really old
<jfhbrook> was thinking about trolling them on that
<pikajude> fb has some great QoL stuff
<pikajude> if you want to work on www you can hit a button to get an on-demand VM with the codebase checked out already
<jfhbrook> dunno what QoL is
<pikajude> quality of life
<jfhbrook> I like, as a company fb ain't my fave but the paycheck and perks are, uh
<jfhbrook> what's the word I'm looking for
<jfhbrook> compelling
<jfhbrook> they're compelling
<pikajude> yeah
<jfhbrook> I think I'm too much of a noob to pass the interview
<pikajude> i mean
<pikajude> someone asked me this question recently
<jfhbrook> but who knows
<pikajude> how i feel about facebook
<pikajude> and i'm like
<pikajude> idk
<pikajude> no idea
<jfhbrook> I know exactly how I feel about it
<pikajude> oh good
<jfhbrook> I think it's a really polished product, though the website resource-wise is a lil heavy. I don't love the business model and I think facebook in some ways makes life worse not better (see: fake news) and I wish moderation was meaner to right wing dipshits
<pikajude> right
<jfhbrook> so I can't feel /good/ about increasing market dominance here, buuut
<pikajude> i'm working on the fake news stuff on search
<pikajude> so that's how i justify it morally to myself
<jfhbrook> I also feel like to a certain extent you can get away with working for soulless corps (I work for one already, they're called Univision and they're beholden to private equity types)
<jfhbrook> that's chill
<pikajude> i mean i gotta pay the rent
<jfhbrook> my biggest thing w/ fb is it would fundamentally change some of my friendships
<pikajude> that's weird
<ljharb> why
<jfhbrook> I have a friend that would actually try to hack my work
<ljharb> Doesn’t sound like much of a friend tbh
<jfhbrook> because he thinks facebook is /actually/ bad for the world
<jfhbrook> nah he's an excellent friend he just has really strong political opinions abt facebook (that I'm sympathetic to!)
<ljharb> None of the ways Facebook are bad for the world will be mitigated or stopped if Facebook vanished Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―
<jfhbrook> I don't disagree
<ljharb> and hacking Facebook would just distract from what they need to improve and make them a martyr in the eyes of some, so it’d be counterproductive
<jfhbrook> you're missing the point ljharb
<jfhbrook> the core problem is that using data to do good ad targeting is fundamentally awful and the entire internet needs to be flipped over to serve the needs of The People rather than the needs of capitalism
<jfhbrook> you feel me?
<jfhbrook> sooolidarity foreeeever
<ljharb> i agree it’s fundamentally awful
<jfhbrook> like I said though I think the product is phenomenal
<jfhbrook> I have qualms but I love the product
<ljharb> agreed
