<Pulse2496> Since paid Usenet servers have over 3y retention(free services a few weeks)and are quite easy accessible, while having high speed backbones mirrored across the globe(relative low delay availability for files/chunks),
<Pulse2496> would a combination of IPFS data mirrored on Usenet be some achievable IPFS availability-boost solution? I'm a total noob with IPFS but had this thought about it.
<Pulse2496> When fetching some IPFS directory with an Usenet activated client, the service uploads the ipfs dir(nzb)when marked to Usenet(alt.binaries.ipfs) if not done by other clients or when files are aged.
<Pulse2496> This way as a single node you may create your own 3y+ redundancy without the need of staying online for distribution after publishing, and you can lower the storage footprint on some node, while keeping/boosting the availability.
<Pulse2496> If some accelerated client wants receive some historical announced ipfs directory(deleted from drive/low peer distributed) and its unable to find nodes within a certain time, it reaches for some alt.binaries.ipfs and downloads the directory/file uploaded by himself earlier or by others when available, and mirrors the data back to the IPFS ecosystem.

<jamiew> oh interesting, just need to setup some tunnels to my server so I can try that out. thanks fiatjaf
<jamiew> btw has anyone found a reliable configuration for e.g. ssh tunneling? I've tried just simple port forwarding of 5001 but it didn't work in all cases
<fiatjaf> jamiew, I never did ssh tunneling, but I use https://www.zerotier.com/ for all my unsolvable networking challenges and it is awesome.
<fiatjaf> create a private network, connect all machines to it, access every other from any over lan.

<Spetzatin31> Did anyone attempt to make a ga,e?

<Spetzatin31> Yes :(
<Spetzatin31> Multiplayer would be problematic, right?
<voker57> what do you mean? how it's related to ipfs?
<Swedneck> i think libp2p is technically more relevant, but ipfs is good enough imo
<Spetzatin31> The game would run on IPFS instead of centralized servers
<Swedneck> i mean you'd probably load the game over ipfs :P
<Spetzatin31> Yes
<Spetzatin31> So it is possible, but it has a certain hassle
<Swedneck> well it wouldn't run on ipfs, it'd be served via ipfs
<Swedneck> it'd run on the local machine, and communicate using libp2p
<Spetzatin31> But would it work fast?
<Spetzatin31> I'm new to IPFS
<Spetzatin31> And I've seen that many "services" who use IPFPS are slower than traditional websites
<Spetzatin31> Like OpenBazaar or Dtube
Magik6k has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<Swedneck> think of ipfs as a way to serve files, not anything else
<Swedneck> i think pubsub might be useful for a game, but i'm not sure if that's strictly IPFS or if that falls under libp2p
<Swedneck> IPFS is definitely still slower in single-server scenarios
<Spetzatin31> Mm ok, from what I've read it is not possible right now to delete contents
<Spetzatin31> So, once uploaded, it's there forever
<Spetzatin31> Correct?
<Swedneck> don't think of ipfs as storage
<Swedneck> it's technically correct, but it leads to misunderstanding it
<Spetzatin31> I see
<Spetzatin31> What are the best pinning services?
<Swedneck> iirc eternum.io is the best one, or at least the most well known
<Spetzatin31> Thank you :)
<Swedneck> i'll pin anything small if you want :D
<Spetzatin31> I'm still testing the idea, and getting to know it better
<Spetzatin31> When I will have something to pin I will let you know ;)

<Spetzatin31> So, talking about a "decentralized website", someone can use IPFS instead of for example Digital Ocean, and a name registrar to register a website name
<Spetzatin31> and combine a website name and IPFS to have a complete working functiong website
<Spetzatin31> And permanent one..
<Swedneck> well it has to be static
<Swedneck> so not php or anything like that
<Swedneck> it'll only be permanent if enough people pin it
<Swedneck> (and keep pinning it)
<Spetzatin31> But there are some possibilities to make it dynamic I guess
<Spetzatin31> Dtube I do not think is static
<Swedneck> you can use JS
<Swedneck> dtube isn't served via ipfs
<Spetzatin31> Really? they say so
<Swedneck> they do...
<Swedneck> and i quite dislike them for making people think that
<Swedneck> so far as i know, dtube only uses ipfs to "store" videos
<Swedneck> idk if they even make the hashes of videos available
<Spetzatin31> Wait wait are you sure?
<Spetzatin31> They clearly say
<Spetzatin31> D.Tube is powered by
<Spetzatin31> Tube
<Spetzatin31> Asksteem
<Spetzatin31> Ipfs
<Spetzatin31> Steem
<Swedneck> powered by, not served via
<jacky> yeah they might be using it purely for storage
<Spetzatin31> Maybe they use centralized servers for the interface, and decentralized server for storage? :/
<Spetzatin31> servers*
<Swedneck> compare it to ipfs.io, which can be served via a gateway: https://gateway.swedneck.xyz/ipns/ipfs.io
<Swedneck> yeah i think that's what they do
<Spetzatin31> Your website is quite snappy
<Spetzatin31> Good on you :)

<Swedneck> my website?
<Swedneck> that's just my gateway, the website is ipfs.io

<Spetzatin31> Ok, I thought you were mirroring it
<Swedneck> you can use any gateway: https://cloudflare-ipfs.com/ipns/ipfs.io
<Spetzatin31> I guess I have some stuff to learn
<Swedneck> i have pinned ipfs.io a while ago
<Swedneck> sadly pinning doesn't follow ipns yet
<Swedneck> i should make my server periodically pin the latest version actually
<Swedneck> thanks for reminding me :P

<Spetzatin31> That's black magic
<Spetzatin31> Why ipfs is accesible from cloudflare and gateway.swedneck
<Swedneck> also, if you want a less shady youtube alternative, check out peertube: https://joinpeertube.org
<Swedneck> because those are just gateways
<Swedneck> they take the `/ipns/domain.com` bit, check if domain.com or _dnslink.domain.com has a TXT record with an IPFS hash, and if it find an IPFS hash it requests it from the IPF S network and serves it to you via HTTP
<Swedneck> if you install IPFS on your PC you can instead use `localhost:8080/ipns/domain.com`, and your computer will do all that instead
<Swedneck> also i've checked, and i cannot find the hashes of videos on d.tube
<Swedneck> instead of just using the IPFS hash to locate the videos, they use some other shorter hash

<postables> there was a github issue or something opened up on go-ipfs repo about moving the hyperboria (or turkish wiki) data set onto IPFS, and how it reduced the total space required to store said dataset. Does anyone happen to have a link to this?

<lidel> Swedneck, my guess is that the rendered path comes from HTTP request. See https://ipfs.io/ipns/litmem.es/

<Swedneck> heh
<Swedneck> always showing the hash seems more useful to me

<lidel> Swedneck, I get where you are coming from.. If you feel it is more bug than a feature, please fill and issue https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/ with screenshots of both https://litmem.es and https://ipfs.io/ipns/litmem.es/ as it is a good base for discussion. I am bit ambivalent, it could be changed, or made configurable :)
<Swedneck> i mean it's definitely a feature, but i consider it a bugged feature :P

<lidel> I am quite sure it will be a tricky one, some people will prefer nice URL path instead of CIDs, so making this a config option sounds like a good way to tackle this.
<Swedneck> well consider if someone were to screenshot it

<lidel> Perk of the open web, different people use the same feature for different things :)
<Swedneck> now imagine you're a guy in the future who sees this screenshot, and wants to access the data
<Swedneck> would you prefer an IPFS hash, or IPNS?
Magik6k has joined #ipfs
<lidel> those are some dank memes, sure i want to access them
<lidel> but its just me, other people may just want a nice human-readable path, or IPNS one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
<Swedneck> i realized showing BOTH is probably best :P
<Swedneck> Perhaps it could have the current behaviour, but also display the IPFS hash on the right hand side?
Magik6k has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<lidel> revamping directory listing is sort of a deeper subject
Magik6k has joined #ipfs
<lidel> but i agree, we should make CIDs more prominent, but that will happen after move to cidv1b32: https://github.com/ipfs/ipfs/issues/337
