<damex> hello, i have libre.computer le potato board (s905x / gxl) and wonder if it is possible to do a boot without using vendor blobs. i see that there is a bl31 at upstream ATF and upstream uboot for the board seem to be present. would bl31 be enough to bootup in this case or i need all the stages like bl2/bl31/bl32/bl33?

<hexdump0815> damex: as far as i understand there is no way around bl2 (low level ram initialization) and bl30 (scp = system control processor firmware) ... bl31 can be replaced by a self compiled atf for gxl and you can use gxlimg to build the boot image out of all this
<hexdump0815> damex: i think rockchip socs can be made blob free (i.e. all initialization is done by a self compiled u-boot) ... allwinner can initialize memory often from u-boot too, but i think also has something like scp with an own firmware - not sure if that can be dropped somehow

<hexdump0815> damex: on gxl bl2 and bl30 are around 50k each, so there is i think some kind of a limit of what bad might be done within them keeping in mind, that they would still have to fulfill their regular function too :)
<hexdump0815> damex: but you never know ...
<hexdump0815> damex: ... if you do not have the source code
<damex> hexdump0815: thank you, i already have the board and want to try to make it work with least amount of blobs possible. as for allwinner - i have here h5 board (tritium from librecomputer) and its uboot is assembled from upstream atf + upstream uboot (just got 2.2 atf and 2020.1 uboot working)
<damex> yeah, you never know what it is doing unless you have the source code ;(
<damex> hexdump0815: is all rockchips are actually blob free? i am thinking about rk3288 or rk3399. they got pretty popular recently
<hexdump0815> damex: i think we start to get a bit off topic for the amlogic channel, but maybe as a quick and last answer: i think the rockchips can be made blob free if there is according support for them in mainline u-boot, which i think is the case for the two you mentioned
<damex> thanks, got a question about amlogic gxl (s905x) - it is enough (to make it work) to get vendor bl2 and bl30, build bl31 from upstream atf, sign them and pack along upstream uboot using gxlimg or there is something else needs to be done to make amlogic board boot?

<hexdump0815> damex: that should work
<damex> thanks, it works, just booted board using vendor bl2 and bl30. used bl31 = atf 2.2, bl33 = uboot 2020.01.
<hexdump0815> cool - congratulations - that sounds good
