<whitequark>
what's up with all those ping failures? they are very annoying
<sb0>
small aperture is fine if used for pumping to medium/high vacuum.
<sb0>
and if your system is small
<whitequark>
well, we have such valves, and magnox sells a lot of different kinds of them as well
<whitequark>
remember the one i got for helium? that was an all-metal diaphragm valve
<whitequark>
and the one i was disassembling was an all-metal needle valve
<sb0>
I saw a very ghetto high-vac system at UNAM. a swagelok all-metal valve with KF25 + CF16 welded on each side, then CF16 5-way for window + ion pump + rubidium dispenser, and then the experimental chamber is a CF35 cube like the one I have
<sb0>
they only pump it down to 10-5 through the valve, and then close it and run the ion pump
<whitequark>
interesting

whitequark: great :)
<whitequark>
sb0: btw why don't you just use silver plated bolts?
<whitequark>
they aren't expensive and they don't require grease
<sb0>
the cube does not have bolts.
<sb0>
for those flanges that have bolts, I don't care so much about lubrication, I can just saw or otherwise break the screw if it seizes

hang on. how does the cube work then?
<whitequark>
also if you are ever going to deal with a seized stainless steel screw you are going to rapidly discover that SS is hard, elastic, and very demanding of tools

it eats HSS for breakfast. so you might want to avoid that, too.
<whitequark>
(try sawing a 316L bolt when you have a minute, it is very enlightening)

you need screws that have the correct length, the cube has threaded holes for them
