<DocScrutinizer05> whitequark: china is kinda like russia, you never know what they're actually planning and what will become of any new regulation
<whitequark> DocScrutinizer05: yeah, and such change isn't happening overnight
<whitequark> we'll see.
<DocScrutinizer05> tbh I'm happy when aussie coal export stalls
<DocScrutinizer05> it's irrelevant where the coal gets burnt and transformed into pollution
<viric> the plan is always the same, conquest of the world
<viric> well, not the plan. the goal. :)
<DocScrutinizer05> and even when china simply switches from aussie coal to local coal, they might at least extinguish their massive coal mine fires then
<whitequark> I think we don't really have any method for doing that? like at all
<DocScrutinizer05> well, there are a few methoods, but expensive
<DocScrutinizer05> what's not working is water
<DocScrutinizer05> CO2 might
<DocScrutinizer05> trenches work for sure
<whitequark> hm, it depends on what exactly burns. I think some of those fires have an internal source of oxygen?
<DocScrutinizer05> but obviously are extremely expensive to dig
<whitequark> like nitrate ores or something
<whitequark> which is why they burn in the first place, being deep as hell
<DocScrutinizer05> I don't think so
<DocScrutinizer05> I guess the source is water and air nevertheless
<whitequark> hmm
<DocScrutinizer05> it's quite unlikely that they have blackpowder in their mines ;-D
<DocScrutinizer05> (mixture of coal and nitrate)
<whitequark> haha right
<jbenedet1o> coal mine fires?
<jbenedet1o> hehhhhh
* jbenedet1o lives in Pennsylvania
<jbenedet1o> Home to one of the most famous US mine fires: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania
<jbenedet1o> mine fires are really freaking hard to put out.
<whitequark> yupp
<DocScrutinizer05> >>burning beneath the borough since 1962<< wow
<DocScrutinizer05> hey!! when you can't put it out, why not *use* it?
<DocScrutinizer05> isn't it completely irrelevant *where* the coal burns, when you want to burn it anyway?
<DocScrutinizer05> looks to me like an ideal location for "geothermic" power ;-)
<DocScrutinizer05> congrats
<whitequark> no stinky touchscreen, too
<wpwrak> whitequark: now, among the local audience, you probably now have the best-equipped home :)
<DocScrutinizer05> got me the tiny brother ;-) http://www.hps140.com/
<DocScrutinizer05> why did I read "sticky"?
<wpwrak> DocScrutinizer05: first they become sticky, after a while stinky ... :)
<whitequark> 10MHz bandwidth
<whitequark> that's ... sorta pathetic
<DocScrutinizer05> good enough to detect some constant 147kHz noise on my desk already
<whitequark> well I suppose it's good for what it's intended
<wpwrak> given 40 MSa/s, that's more than enough :)
<DocScrutinizer05> of course it's no real scope
<DocScrutinizer05> rather sort of a graphical DMM
<DocScrutinizer05> actually the latter is what I intended to get, but they had none
<DocScrutinizer05> what sucks: it has no interface for data#
<jbenedet1o> heh
<DocScrutinizer05> that's *really* pathetic
<jbenedet1o> as far as extinguising a mine fire, we did that recently in Pittsburgh.
<DocScrutinizer05> how?
<jbenedet1o> by extinguish we mean "find out which way its spreading and box it in by digging massive trenches and filling them with clay"
<DocScrutinizer05> (data) prolly would conflict with the (rather non-trustworthy) CAT2 it claims
<jbenedet1o> and then let it burn out.
<DocScrutinizer05> hah! trenches
<DocScrutinizer05> what I suggested above
<jbenedet1o> it works but its really a huge pain
<jbenedet1o> we are lucky the fire in question was a shallow mine.
<DocScrutinizer05> sure, and risk of starting new fires by digging the trench ;-P
<jbenedet1o> we have a number of deep mine fires that are as you might say, out of site out of mine. *rimshot*
<DocScrutinizer05> that coal crap is self igniting
<jbenedet1o> well can be. generally it gets lit by user error
<DocScrutinizer05> nah, usually gets lit by water and air
<jbenedet1o> Centralia's fire started as they used an open mine pit as a town dump, and when it filled up they burned it.
<DocScrutinizer05> LOL
<jbenedet1o> (I'm not joking)
<DocScrutinizer05> begging for trouble is a bad habit
<jbenedet1o> a number of abandoned mines got turned into town dumps and a number caught fire that way.
<DocScrutinizer05> idiots
<viric> coal, water and air was a usual way to get light in homes
<DocScrutinizer05> surefire literally
<viric> plus a spark
* DocScrutinizer05 idly wonders how many coal heaps will get ignited by rain getting heavier with global warming
<DocScrutinizer05> you see one such heap next to each coal power plant
<viric> well, if you don't mine it, rain/air won't reach it
<viric> ah heaps, ok
<viric> well, it takes a special kind of coal to light with water
<viric> isn't it?
<DocScrutinizer05> brown coal won't ignite aiui, yes
<DocScrutinizer05> not sure though
<jbenedet1o> no clue.
<viric> well, for home lighting, you had to buy a special kind of coal
fmeerkoetter has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<jbenedet1o> what gets me was I cant imagine how brown the gas station attendants pants were after discovering the fire was under the station
<DocScrutinizer05> I guess you rather need a setup that has certain properties like amount of air circulation, exceeding a certain volume, etc
<jbenedet1o> (they mention this find in the article)
<jbenedet1o> "John Coddington, inserted a dipstick into one of his underground tanks to check the fuel level. When he withdrew it, it seemed hot, so he lowered a thermometer down on a string and was shocked to discover that the temperature of the gasoline in the tank was 172 °F (77.8 °C)"
fmeerkoetter has joined #qi-hardware
<DocScrutinizer05> LOL!!!
<DocScrutinizer05> already boiling
<viric> and then he run away
<DocScrutinizer05> hot gasoline, niiiiice
<DocScrutinizer05> prolly the best he could do. after closing the tank lid again
<viric> what article is that?
* DocScrutinizer05 idly wonders where from that dude got that thermometer that had a range upto 80°C
<DocScrutinizer05> pope fedexcus?
<DocScrutinizer05> fedex affiliated?
<jbenedet1o> I am the first Pope of the Church of Latter-day Deliveries.

<sung> do any of have the r5350 hardware design/ap design sheet?
zrafa has joined #qi-hardware
<zrafa> kristianpaul: hey!!
<zrafa> kristianpaul: I need your help!
<zrafa> or wpwrak ?
<zrafa> or anybody who has tried serial in ben nanonote or sie board?
<zrafa> What is the hell happening with rx pin in serial ?
<zrafa> I can not get bytes from it. In fact, I checked the uart status line register and it never gets the bit "data receive" bit, or whatever the name is in 1. Like if uart never receives the bytes sent to the ben or sie board.
<zrafa> ANd of course, if I try to read the data bits I get a segmentation fault or similar.
