<ncls> hello
<ncls> Your kernel does not appear to be compiled with support for unprivileged user
<ncls> namespaces (CONFIG_USER_NS=y), or something else is preventing creation of user
<ncls> namespaces.

<ncls> I just got a server and tried to install Sandstorm but I get accross this error ...
<ncls> it's a typical debian 8.2 install
<ncls> is there any workaround ?
<ncls> or should I report a bug ?

<dwrensha> ncls: what is you kernel version?
<dwrensha> *your
<dwrensha> what is the output of `uname -a`?
<ncls> hi dwrensha, I just learnt it's a custom kernel from the provider of my server (although it's not a "cloud" one)
<ncls> dwrensha: Linux ns330353.ip-37-187-119.eu 3.14.32-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64
<ncls> I try to install either a new kernel, or a new distrib. but I get no information about the customization so it's not easy to pick one
<dwrensha> 3.14 should be new enough.
<dwrensha> Maybe the kernel was explicitly compiled with user namespaces disabled
<dwrensha> (as with Arch Linux https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36969 )
<ncls> I made a "grep" kind of check (but I can't find the command again), it returned nothing, as it wasn't specified in the relevant config file
<ncls> what distrib would you recommand, Debian ? Cent OS ?
<dwrensha> Debian should be fine
<dwrensha> I think CentOS will have too old of a kernel
<dwrensha> because it has very long release cycles
<ncls> ok
<ncls> will try with an Ubuntu Server
<ncls> same problem, but same custom kernel ..
<ncls> is this some kind of option we can enable/disable manually ?
<dwrensha> can you do `sysctl -w kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone=1`?
<dwrensha> that's the usual thing we have to do on Debian-based systems to all user namespaces https://github.com/sandstorm-io/sandstorm/blob/d7fefd7306cc7c3d5fc779b417eb2d8ab226930a/install.sh#L461-L483
<dwrensha> the install script usually attempts to do it automatically
<ncls> no file or directory
<dwrensha> sounds like you should contact your hosting provider, then
<dwrensha> and ask about user namespaces support in their custom kernel
<ncls> ok thank you
<ncls> I'm afraid I know too little to ask this properly, but I'll try
<dwrensha> we have some issues on Github that you can link to, e.g. https://github.com/sandstorm-io/sandstorm/issues/671
<ncls> thanks dwrensha

<mnutt> I’m excited about the vagrant 1.8 release, I have tons of vagrant-spk VMs scattered around my hard drive taking up space and I’m hoping Linked Clones will free a lot of that up: https://www.hashicorp.com/blog/vagrant-1-8.html

<simonv3> this may be overkill, but I have a RaspberryPi lying around, and was thinking of setting it up as a small sandstorm server that I can play with and carry around, anyone tried that?
<zarvox> sandstorm is currently limited to x86_64 (because the packages include native binaries, and we didn't want to fragment the ecosystem from the get-go)
<simonv3> dang
<mrshu> that would actually be a pretty big thing for sandstorm
<zarvox> last I checked, Mongo didn't run on non-x86_64 either
<zarvox> which is the DB most well-integrated with Meteor, and the one Sandstorm uses
<zarvox> I think all the Sandstorm code would work equally well if recompiled for arm, though

<asheesh> mrshu & simonv3: You can get a small Intel-compatible board, fwiw. MinnowBoard is one of the names I hear most commonly.
<asheesh> https://www.arduino.cc/en/ArduinoCertified/IntelGalileo looks useful but is secretly 32-bits (also whoa TIL Intel even makes 32-bit CPUs still)
<asheesh> http://up-shop.org/ is theoretically interesting but these are just pre-orders.

<mrshu> asheesh: don't you worry, I have a couple of those lying around somewhere
<mrshu> asheesh: it's just that with RPi you are targeting a totally different audience
<mrshu> asheesh: which is also vastly different in terms of magnitude
<mrshu> asheesh: from business point of view I completely understand, however, why it does not make sense to focus on it
<asheesh> Yeah - it is kind of sad that we don't target Raspberry Pi-type machines yet. They sure have a massive install base!
<asheesh> I'd mega love to see someone do a tutorial + photos of running Sandstorm on a little Intel thing.
<simonv3> heh, all the minnowboard retailers are out of stock
<mrshu> asheesh: if I find one, I'll certainly put that together
<asheesh> Wow, awesome!
<asheesh> BTW where are you based, mrshu?
jadewang has joined #sandstorm
<mrshu> asheesh: central europe, will certainly make sure to show up at your meetup if I make it to the bay area in the next few months =)
<asheesh> (-:
<asheesh> BTW there is a .CH meetup I believe, let me find the link
<asheesh> http://www.meetup.com/Sandstorm-CH/events/226863112/ , probably a bit far from central Europe!
<asheesh> Perhaps you can find some Sandstorm fans at CCC, if you're going this year!
<mrshu> I can assure you there are many! =)
<mrshu> but it does not seem likely I'll make it this year
<asheesh> That is too bad!
