ohsix: AFAIK, the point+viewport workplane creation only works if you want something orthogonal to the coordinate axes. The viewport orientation just acts as a hint

Usually if I don't have a pair of lines to define it, and I need a workplane at some weird angle/offset, I add a new 3D Sketch (New Group -> Sketch in 3D) that just contains the construction that gets me an origin and two lines

Here's an example with some offset origins and one workplane at an angle: https://goo.gl/EeJRuf The groups that have names starting with '#ref' are the ones that contain the different workplane constructions

(I think there are one or two that were mostly just to deal with circle shenanigans)

Na: sounds about right, i've read that message like a hundred times and i can't take it in :]
