<alex88> hi guys :) is possible to install a gem from the gemfile and ignore their version dependencies on other gems? since it's a non so updated gem and it requires for older versions of other gems
<alex88> so I don't have to create a fork, edit gemspec and so on

<jugglinmike> My project version controls the `Gemfile` and `Gemfile.lock`. When I run `bundle install`, Bundler updates the `Gemfile.lock`. Why is that?
<ddd> because if you bundle install and a newer version of a dep is used, it changes the written lock file
<jugglinmike> ddd: Ahh, so it's because I must have installed a new version of some gem globally on my dev machine?
<ddd> well that or in your gemset.
<jugglinmike> I'll google that :P
<ddd> say you have GemA. and it depends on GemC and GemE. GemE depends on any GemF in say 2.x range. You had 2.1, 2.2 was rleased. its usable and newer so bundler will use that one instead. that would cause a rewrite of the lock file to reflect the change
<jugglinmike> ah okay
<jugglinmike> Here's my trouble
<jugglinmike> bundler is acting this way, and it means that when I work on the project, I have to pick around the Gemfile.lock when I'm staging changes for my version control system
<jugglinmike> This seems like a hassle that most Ruby developers wouldn't be dealing with, i.e. my environment is a little broken and/or improperly isolated
<jugglinmike> ...or maybe I just shouldn't be running `bundle install`
<jugglinmike> although
<jugglinmike> I have a feature branch where I'm adding a gem to the `Gemfile`
<jugglinmike> and (version control issues aside), I would like to update the Gemfile.lock to include the new dependencies. If I run `bundle install`, the rest of the dependencies will also be updated. I'd like to avoid that, because I don't know what effect updating the dependencies will have, and I'd like to update & test those separately
<jugglinmike> ...it's `bundle update`, isn't it
<jugglinmike> hmm that doesn't seems to solve the problem, though
<jugglinmike> Let's say I run `bundle update uglify_js`, then commit the Gemfile and Gemfile.lock .
<jugglinmike> In the production environment, I have a deploy script that runs `bundle install --deployment`, so that should be fine
<jugglinmike> but when other developers get the latest commit
<jugglinmike> They would run `bundle install` (the docs on --deploy say not to use it in development), get the uglify_js gem, but *also* update their local copy of `Gemfile.lock`
