<diegoviola> hi
<diegoviola> there's no need to require anything once a gem is specified in the gemfile, right?
<Radar> diegoviola: I don't understand the question.
<Radar> diegoviola: If you're calling Bundler.setup (which you should) then you will need to require things as you need them
<Radar> If you're doing Bundler.require, Bundler will itself require all the things.
<diegoviola> Radar: there's some code here that is doing things like `require 'RMagick'` https://github.com/benwbrum/fromthepage/blob/master/app/controllers/page_controller.rb
<diegoviola> in controllers
<diegoviola> which just looks wrong to me
<Radar> controllers are Ruby files too
<Radar> and it's probably that the model needs that more than the controller
<diegoviola> i have that in my config/application.rb: Bundler.require(*Rails.groups)
<diegoviola> so if i do require: true in the gemfile, i don't have to require those gems in separate controller/model files anymore?
<diegoviola> well i just tried that with pry -r ./config/environment and it looks like i can call the Magick class without doing a require

<lurch_> how can i speedup a bundle install? we do: bundle install —path vendor/bundle and then create a .tar.gz of the app directory which can just be unpacked on other machines (provisioned through puppet, so same versions of libraries available). Saw bundle package, but that just caches gems and the bundle install still tries to build native extensions every time
<lurch_> We have a hacky solution where we just copy/rsync the vendor/bundle directory to some place on the system as a cache, and copy it back into vendor/bundle when we try to do a bundle install, but that has the downside of bringing in old gems
<lurch_> also, every app has their own cache, so if we have 3 apps, they aren’t benefitting from each other when one of them already built some native extensions

gioele has joined #bundler
<gioele> I would like to state in my Gemfile "please use Ruby version 2.1 or 2.1.x". How can I do that? I tried adding to the Gemfile `ruby "2.1"`, `ruby "> 2.1"` and `ruby "~> 2.1.0"` but bundler complains with "Your Ruby version is 2.1.1, but your Gemfile specified ~> 2.1.0"
<gioele> ok, it looks like it is not possible: http://stackoverflow.com/q/23116456/449288

<Harzilein> hi
<Harzilein> i was sure that i had seen, relatively recently, an announcement for an "official" way to make use of system gems for e.g. alternative repls, or rspec formatters
<Harzilein> but i seem to be especially clumsy with google today
<Harzilein> can anyone help me out with that?
