is anyone here who knows some problems with powering of Cubieboard 2 if the powersupply is not stable enough to get the 2 Ampere out that the cubieboard hangs up on booting up with 2,5" s-ata drive?

<Faisal>
FR^2: debian official latest
<Faisal>
installed with installer

Faisal: Ah. What's the status of the 2D/3D/Video acceleration of that?
<Faisal>
FR^2: i dont think that yet in the picture, its to use it as a headless server....
<Faisal>
FR^2: id have to look into it though
<FR^2>
Faisal: Ah, okay :)
wickwire has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<FR^2>
Thhunder: Isn't that normal? If a PC (any kind of) doesn't get enough power it can hang any time? ;)
<Thhunder>
FR^2, yes it is... but is that a real problem with cubieboards if the power has some peaks (like starting up an s-ata hard-drive on powerup or stick an usb stick or something) that crashes the booting process or any running system?
<Thhunder>
sometimes it has no problems to boot-up and run but othertimes it can't because of the powerpeaks i think
<Thhunder>
is there a way to test it?
<FR^2>
Thhunder: I'm not sure I understood your issue clearly. In general a system crashes if its power supply doesn't provide enough current to cover the peaks... be it by e.g. hdd spinup or by cpu peaks...
<Faisal>
Thhunder: you may have a hdd that draws too much power too
<Faisal>
Thhunder: is it an old 2.5 drive ?
<FR^2>
Thhunder: Test the power supply :) Add a (measured) resistor as a load and test the currents
<Thhunder>
Faisal, no its not that old thing two years...
<Thhunder>
FR^2, will ty hope to get some final results to find out the problem of the crashes :/
<FR^2>
Thhunder: And you're sure that your power supply serves 2A at 5V and has sufficient ("superfluous") power?
<Faisal>
Thhunder: what kind of usb charger are you using ?
<FR^2>
I'll go home now, I could check the specs on my power supply if that is of any help. I could also attach an "old" (5 years?) 2,5" sata hdd laying around.
<FR^2>
See ya

<Thhunder>
Faisal, sry for the late response to you i think it is the powersuply i got it with my cubieboard from expTech in an bundle it is an 5V 2A USB suply i don't know wich one need a look to check at home
<Thhunder>
at the moment i'm not there ^^
<Faisal>
Thhunder: not a problem
<Faisal>
Thhunder: just saying because i ve seen that issue before
<Faisal>
Thhunder: the charger makes a difference
<Faisal>
Thhunder: if you can grab something off a tablet just for tests
<Faisal>
Thhunder: im sure itll work better
<Faisal>
Thhunder: i had the same issue with a usb charger, then i used the one from my nexus 7 tablet and now problem is gone
<Thhunder>
it needs a bit more power? i think that the powersuply what i got in the bundle is a cheap china product and has no chance to hold on some power-needed peaks right?
<Faisal>
Thhunder: yes exactly, and thats exactly what i had too, sme cheap chinamade stuff
<Faisal>
let me know once you have given a try with a differenct charger, but im almost certain thats the cause of your problem
<Thhunder>
ok thats what i thought about it so i asked around here to get some response for it that the problem can be the powersuply and not my cubie :)
<Faisal>
i dont think its the cubie, the power chip on it is a very good one (axp209)
<Thhunder>
yeahs have to look arround for a new one with a bit more power ;)
<Thhunder>
like an 3 - 4 A multi powersuply switch it to 5 V would be fine
<Thhunder>
ok i will be back tommorow hope at 8 pm with a new power-suply for testing... to give some feedback hope it will fix my problem to have an stable home-server :) cubieboard is noiseless and much cheaper as an x86 pentium system @ 24h run ;)
<Thhunder>
gn8 to all hope to be back tomorrow after work and some tests :)
<Thhunder>
and thanks Faisal for help :)
