<ELLIOTTCABLE>
fuuuuuck I hate not having powerstrips at conferences.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
on the bright side: 60,000mAh battery built into my backpack like a fucking boss
<joepie91>
ELLIOTTCABLE: pack more powerstrips!
<joepie91>
bring an entire bag of them!
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
Oh, hon, I'm so far ahead of you π€£
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
Got power-distribution built in (jankily, but still) to my bag
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
tend to share it with people at my table, when I can
<joepie91>
right :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
problem is when confs don't think ahead about this, there's no way to get power *to the table*
<joepie91>
lots of extension cords?
<joepie91>
and the wall socket in the bathroom
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
can't carry a cord and just string it over the ground to one of the, idk, four(?) wall outlets in the entire room, y'know? dangerous, etc
<joepie91>
pft
<joepie91>
just tape it down
* ELLIOTTCABLE
rolls eyes
<joepie91>
ELLIOTTCABLE: I'm only slightly serious :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
joepie91: I kno I kno
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
but it's a real problem β basically whoever gets near to the plugs first, gets power; and everyone else is screwed
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
similar to the recurring issue with conf organizers *always* failing to successfully convince the venue operators how serious the network demands of technical-conference attendees are going to be :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
βoh u have 400 attendees, our network can definitely handle 200 simultaneous devices, we've done this many timesβ
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
oh, honey. this is developers. think more like 3 simultaneous devices per attendee.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
I've been to β¦ *two* conferences, ever, where the WiFi hasn't gone down halfway thru? :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
ignore me sigh

ELLIOTTCABLE: try the European hacker events :P
<joepie91>
they've got their network shit down
<joepie91>
chaos communication congress, SHA2017 and such

organizers typically bring their own pile of hardware
<joepie91>
result: a fucking *campsite* with reliable wifi throughout, despite literally thousands of devices being connected
<jfhbrook>
I refuse to go to a european conference
<joepie91>
jfhbrook: why? :P
<jfhbrook>
europeans are all ultra smug, it's well known
<joepie91>
jfhbrook: sure, but we also have reason to be :D
<jfhbrook>
see that's why I'm not going to your conference
<jfhbrook>
for real tho I'd do something chill in like berlin or something but hopefully w/ a friend and not like hacker-focused like ccc
<jfhbrook>
I could get down for something about functional programming but not right wing like lambdaconf
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
ditched so hard
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
and yah joepie91 I am aware
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
the best implementations I've seen of industry confs had a similar approach: screw trying to convince the venue, bring in outside contractors and custom hardware.
<joepie91>
yeah
<joepie91>
ELLIOTTCABLE: took the CCC a few iterations to get it right too, though :)
