<Tenacious-Techhu> What are the merits, or lack thereof, of doing Structured ASICs from FPGA designs these days?
promach has joined #homecmos
<lain> structured asic is less flexible for obvious reasons, and has a relatively high up front cost, but much less than doing a full custom asic
<lain> structured asic is beneficial when you need quite a lot of something, but not super duper a lot :P
<lain> bear in mind that the stuff the fpga companies offer is usually a bit different from, say, what eASIC offers
<lain> for example I think xilinx has an "asic-like" service, but they just sell you the fpga of your choice, with your part number, and only tested to run the bitstream you supply for production
<Tenacious-Techhu> lain, that’s about what I’ve heard; what are the current go-to options for Structured ASICs these days, and is it worth it, or is it better to save up for a full ASIC?
<lain> I mean
<lain> that's entirely dependent upon your design and market requirements
<Tenacious-Techhu> I’m mostly interested in advice on which vendors are good, and so on.
<Tenacious-Techhu> Personal experience type stuff.
<lain> I've never done one so I can't comment on the go-to options, but ... as a rough guide: if you want millions of something, or your customers can spend $$$$ per unit, asic is an option. if not, you probably want structured asic or fpga :P
<Tenacious-Techhu> Well, thank you for listening, anyway.
<Tenacious-Techhu> Good luck with that whole IPv6 thing.
