<willnewton> hi
<willnewton> i'm seeing some spurious out of memory errors with linux 3.14 on imx6
<willnewton> i suspect they may be cma related
<willnewton> is this a known issue? is there a way to avoid it?
<willnewton> (by spurious OOM I mean a order 0 allocation with e.g. > 120MB free)
<jmleo> willnewton, well, this is not a mainline kernel, so it can have some bugs yes... is it related to the v4l2 part ?
<willnewton> i'm not sure. i am using the hardware video encoder so i suspect i need cma enabled for this?
<willnewton> i'm not using GPU or video out though

<dv_> willnewton: are you encoding with gstreamer?
<willnewton> dv_: yes, the gstreamer plugins from fsl
<dv_> willnewton: I can't speak for those. I can help you out with mine though (gstreamer-imx)
<dv_> or are you talking about the 0.10 plugins?
<willnewton> i am using gstreamer 0.10.36
<willnewton> the encoder is called "vpuenc"
<willnewton> i don't think the encoder is causing a problem directly - i'm not sure if it uses CMA in the kernel though

<DV__> willnewton: sorry had a network problem
DV__ is now known as dv_
<willnewton> dv__: i'm using gstreamer 0.10.36 and the vpuenc plugin
<willnewton> not sure if that is the best code to use
<willnewton> or whether the VPU requires CMA support in the kernel
<dv_> you should generally never use 0.10 these days
<dv_> it is abandoned, and much worse for hw-decoding
<dv_> (and encoding)
<dv_> as for CMA, yes, the VPU driver needs it for physically contiguous memory allocation
<willnewton> ok, i'll definitely have a look at that
<willnewton> i'm using the 3.10.17 kernel from here:
<willnewton> git.freescale.com/imx/linux-2.6-imx.git
<willnewton> is that a reasonable kernel to use? i haven't found anyone else experience these oom problems so i'm wondering if i'm using a leftfield configuration...
