<abueide[m]> i just had an interesting idea
<abueide[m]> do you think a crypto currency could be built only using ipfs where a block is an ipfs hash containing transaction details and the previous block hash
<abueide[m]> and using pubsub to publish/retrieve block solutions?
<abueide[m]> like proof of work solutions would be published over pubsub and nodes will include it in the block chain if its the longest chain
<abueide[m]> i don't know much how proof of stake works but I assume that would work as well
MDude has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
dasj19 has quit [Quit: dasj19]
<TimMc> abueide[m]: Nothing would prevent someone from just manufacturing a really long chain and publishing it.
<TimMc> Oh, you mention a proof of work... I mean, I guess you could implement a blockchain on top of IPFS, but it seems like the wrong tool for the job. :-)
<abueide[m]> i guess what sparked the idea was whether we could increase blocksizes by making the block an ipfs hash and the transactions stored on ipfs, but that doesn't really solve the problem of increasing block size also increasing block propagation
<abueide[m]> ipfs would probably drastically slow down block propagation compared to the specialized software that already exists for it
<abueide[m]> maybe ipfs and blockchain has a lot of overlap in goals where it would make sense to use ipfs as underlying technology for a blockchain where both the blockchain and ipfs benefit from improvements to the code?
<abueide[m]> idk it might be something fun to mess with, maybe useless idea though. i'm definitely out of my scope on this

<TimMc> abueide[m]: You might be interested in looking into FileCoin's proposed "proof-of-spacetime" works. (FileCoin is an IPFS-related project to incentivize people to store data for each other.)
<TimMc> *into how
<TimMc> I don't know the details myself, but it's refreshing to see a cryptocurrency that doesn't rely on burning electricity, and instead performs useful work as its proof mechanism.
<abueide[m]> oh wow i've heard of filecoin, but not about it using proof of spacetime as a consensus algorithm thats fascinating
<TimMc> My vague understanding is that the data is stored in a munged format that requires one-time work to compute in the first place, but that you can derive proof-of-storage from intermittently with little cost. Something like that.
<TimMc> Maybe you take the current consensus data and use that to generate pseudorandom pointers into the data and retrieve those parts for your proof? That's my guess. :-)

<TimMc> They're still working on building the thing, but I think there's a whitepaper out there.

<TimMc> I'm guardedly optimistic. Currencies are wild beasts that are resistant to prediction and control, but it seems like a pretty useful part of the IPFS ecosystem.
<abueide[m]> are there any ipfs light nodes that don't use up much bandwidth/battery? even after filecoin is there a way to retrieve content from ipfs with high availability without having a dht node?
<BenLubar> ipfs has a lowpower profile
<BenLubar> ipfs config profile apply lowpower
xcm has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<abueide[m]> how well does ipfs work when switching networks?
<BenLubar> as long as you can see some of your bootstrap nodes, other nodes will find you via the dht
xcm has joined #ipfs
<abueide[m]> ah okay cool
<BenLubar> since IPFS is guaranteed to be a DAG, couldn't garbage collection be done entirely via reference counting?
<abueide[m]> do you guys have any idea why i only have 2-4 peers? it takes so long to load ipfs blog and filecoin website (minutes)
