<leowt> has anything changed with the fimc part? i cannot get any fmic device (ex /dev/video10)
<leowt> what needs to be enabled on the kernel?
<leowt> (i want to use gst decoding, i have mfc)
liquidAcid has joined #linux-exynos
<leowt> i do enable drm ipp
<leowt> it has fmic
<leowt> "exynos-drm-fimc 11820000.fimc: drm fimc registered successfully."
<leowt> but no video device on /dev
<leowt> i see that things are different from 3.8 times
<liquidAcid> leowt, video devices are part of the v4l subsystem (and not drm)
<leowt> liquidAcid, so, i dont understand what should i do then? disable drm-ipp and do what?
<liquidAcid> i don't know what you're trying to achieve anyway
<leowt> use gstreamer
<leowt> liquidAcid, "v4l2video8dec ! v4l2video10convert"
<liquidAcid> sry, no idea, never used gstreamer
<leowt> i dont know if there is any other method
<leowt> liquidAcid, you ever used mfc on linux?
<liquidAcid> no
<leowt> there is an "Samsung tv driver for S5P" that has Samsung Mixer and video Processor Driver, i suppose that v4l stuff is inside
<leowt> but if i only enable that, and not the hdmi driver related to the tv driver
<leowt> it doesnt allow to select drm hdmi driver
<liquidAcid> iirc for gstreamer you need an eglsink, so it won't work on mainline anyway
<leowt> liquidAcid, you mean no DRM at all?
<leowt> can you explain?
<liquidAcid> what's to explain?
<liquidAcid> afaik there's no xvideo support in the armsoc ddx
<leowt> liquidAcid, why it wont work on mainline
<Wizzup> leowt: because you could need mali
<liquidAcid> and the drm sink never made it upstream
<leowt> i am using fbdev anyways
<leowt> i see
<leowt> then, what could i do to make it work with gst?
<leowt> another tree?
<liquidAcid> native fbdev, or the drm emulated one?
<leowt> liquidAcid, drm one
<liquidAcid> well, good luck with watching video on that one (no vsync)
<leowt> liquidAcid, ok, so then what tree should i use?
<leowt> so i can get it right
<liquidAcid> the vendor supplied tree?
<leowt> lolol
<leowt> the one that was a nasty rebase from an old odroid one and mfc is not working correctly
<leowt> =P
<leowt> that is my problem
<leowt> the only kernel i have from vendor is an ultra nasty outdated kernel
<liquidAcid> my advice if you want a small device which runs linux and provides efficient video decoding: get an intel nuc, full mainline support ootb and vaapi support with all major applications
<liquidAcid> not the atom nucs, one of the i3 or i5 ones
<leowt> liquidAcid, it is an overkill for me :/
afaerber__ has joined #linux-exynos
<leowt> i was directed to exynos because supposedly it good mainline support :/
<leowt> *it had
<leowt> now i am broken
<leowt> :/
<liquidAcid> well, good is relative
<liquidAcid> it's mediocre to bad when compared to e.g. intel
<leowt> liquidAcid, the only thing i want is to be able to play h264 files with gst, no more
<leowt> i have rpis doing the job, but i want internal flash, not sd cards
afaerber_ has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<liquidAcid> <leowt> now i am broken <- save some money, get an nuc, be happy :)
<leowt> liquidAcid, i want arm =P, just because
<leowt> i have to try i.mx6 yet
<liquidAcid> then you also have to live with the disadvantages
<liquidAcid> seriously, if you just want to watch h264 encoded material, then just get one of these cheap android sticks that do the job
<leowt> liquidAcid, linux, gstreamer and h264 hw, ultra low power and small, not x86 and nand/emmc
<leowt> those are the requierements
<leowt> it is not to watch video as a home entertainment sistem
<leowt> else i would do just that
<liquidAcid> what if you just can't satisfy the requirements?
<leowt> liquidAcid, the only thing i could not find for now was good gst and hw decoding and nand/emmc
<leowt> ate the same time
<WarheadsSE> iMX6 can do hardware h264 decoding @ 1080p
<leowt> i could do h264 decoding containerless with sunxi stuff, but no gst
<leowt> WarheadsSE, i know, but i have to ask for others experience
<leowt> else i will be doing the same mistake ive done with exynos
<WarheadsSE> I have a device doing dual-hdmi 1080p @ 60fps
<WarheadsSE> But, thats custom hardware.
<liquidAcid> WarheadsSE, looks like you have a potential buyer here *g*
<WarheadsSE> I can't sell that hardware, isn't mine :P
<liquidAcid> darn!
<WarheadsSE> I know, I know
<leowt> if it is not sold for less than 100$ i dont buy xD
<leowt> hah
* WarheadsSE sigh
<leowt> WarheadsSE, what is the status of mainline support for imx6?
<WarheadsSE> decent
<leowt> how do imx do the board differenciation?
<WarheadsSE> Freescale does work to commit directly where it can. They're slowly working to get the GPU capable of working to track mainline vs having to essentially roll up every 0.x+4
<leowt> cool
<WarheadsSE> DTB
<leowt> so basically every one using odoird is stuck on 3.8 for mfc usage?
