<tonikasch>
I can boot linux in a rk3066 with an sd card (well, micro-sd card)

No
<Astralix>
ah, not the easy way at least
<Astralix>
So, 3188 and 2918 do support booting directly from SD/MMC cards
<Astralix>
3066 does not support SD
<Astralix>
But if you get a bootloader going that boots off from internal memory, you can lead him to boot kernel and everything else wherever you like
<tonikasch>
ahh, I understand
<tonikasch>
so you are refering to booting directly to sd without using the recovery method?
<Astralix>
The question is coming up very often and it cannot be answered the easy way.
<Astralix>
So the chips must initially boot something like a bootloader, and in that there are some restrictions.
<tonikasch>
ahh, ok
<Astralix>
But if the bootloader is established, it can do anything like you want it to be
<Astralix>
So the limitation is in the first statement, the bootloader cannot be where you like it
<Astralix>
But then you're free to do whatever you want
<Astralix>
In case of RK there are some tricks
<Astralix>
The RK bootloader, we have to use it until we write our own one, needs the parameters section on the NAND
<Astralix>
in that there are the partitions defined
<Astralix>
and some parameters what to put where
<Astralix>
so if you realign these partitons to other addresses or you delete all of them bhut keep only something like kernel and data then you can boot kernel directly from NAND
<Astralix>
Have to leave for lunch
<tonikasch>
ok
<Astralix>
see u later
<tonikasch>
see u later, astralix

lol yeah i thought i was scrolled up for a minute there

as far as I know, there is no RK product which doesn't have NAND
<naobsd>
kernel need to be flashed into NAND, but rest of things can be put on SD card
<naobsd>
it's not so bad, for me.
<naobsd>
if kexec can be used, it's very nice...

omm
<moofree_>
dumb question, does the rk3188 support 64gb sdxc's?
<tonikasch>
moofree_, supposedly at least a device like minix x7 has in its specs that it complies with sd card 3.0 version, so it should, but... haven't tested
<moofree_>
i'll have to give it a try
<tonikasch>
don't desitate to comment your results! :D
<moofree_>
too bad i don't have a dedicated card reader that'll read it lol
<tonikasch>
wow, that was the same for me, my laptop has some years and it doesn'pt comply with sdxc
<naobsd>
generally sdxc card can be used with sdhc host as sdhc card with exfat
<moofree_>
that's true
<moofree_>
but some usb adapters choke on it for some reason
<naobsd>
and format(exfat etc) can be changed if you don't need to use standard format on it
<naobsd>
yup
<moofree_>
i think it worked awkwardly/not-at-all when i tried it on an rk3066 stick, but that was a while ago
<moofree_>
it would format to 32gb or something
<moofree_>
... i could be thinking of my phone lol
