mac- has joined #linux-rockchip
<mac-> hey
<mac-> do you know anything about any new kernel for rk3066 newer than 3.0.36
dlezcano has joined #linux-rockchip
<phh> mainline has some support for rk3066
<phh> right, only i2c/i2s/ethernet/uart/mmc
<mac-> but will it boot the syetm ?
<phh> I guess you want a video output?
<mac-> would be nice
<phh> right, that doesn't exist in mainline
<phh> I've checked the rockchip kernels I know of, and I only see 3.0
<mac-> thats bad
<mac-> this unit is so old already an there is still no good support :/
<phh> I think that's the case of most SoCs of that era
<mac-> any current ones which has better support ?\
<phh> you're asking globally or just rockchip?
<mac-> what about A80 or rk3288 ?
<mac-> \globally
<phh> I can't really tell for A80. ATM it seems the support is quite small, but there is a lot of activity on many allwinner chips
<mac-> really?
<mac-> which ones
<phh> rk3288's mainlining has already many things, and many features have been pushed to LKML, but they have many API problems, because they do things that noone did before... Also it is supported by rockchip: https://github.com/rockchip-linux/
<mac-> rk3288 is quite nice a strong chip
<wens> mac-: step over to #linux-sunxi :)
<phh> mac-: do you think of a special sort of device? tvbox?
<phh> (i.e. do you care about camera/ISP)
<mac-> I used MK808B as my desktop machine
<mac-> witl Arch Linux ARM
<mac-> but after one of updates sth changed in xorg and X stopped to work, driver can't be compiled anyymore
<mac-> I used fbturbo
<phh> ok, so no ISP, no camera, no DSI/LVDS. that makes things easier :P
<phh> right, the X server is still a problem
<mac-> well, only network and video
<phh> ATM i'm using rockchip's X server which uses gles-enabled glamor
<phh> performance wise it's not good.
<mac-> rockchip's X server ?
<mac-> what SoC do you have ?
<phh> rk3288
<phh> you'll see the changes compared to mainline X are fairly small
<mac-> what device do you have ?
<phh> but it's using GLES instead of hardware 2d acceleration. 2d hardware acceleration upstreaming is work in progress, but again, there is some API discussion to be done
<mac-> I understand
<phh> mac-: GPD XD, Archos 101 Oxygen, Asus C201, Asus flip book, Pipo P9, some tv box (can't even tell the reference)
<mac-> many
<phh> yes i'm a fan of that chip
<mac-> I see
<phh> but I think there is a bigger momentum around rk3288 devices than allwinner ones, because C201 is being considered for a 100%-free laptop, and chromiumos team is pushing to have things in mainline
<wens> not to mention rockchip guys also push stuff themselves, unlike allwinner

<wens> though free electrons and the community are doing a lot
<phh> yes, what they do is really impressive
<phh> but rk3399 will be mainlined before devices even ships out...
<phh> no community can beat that
<wens> phh: that's true
<wens> phh: but there's no way that's going to happen unless allwinner gets onboard themselves
<phh> yup
<phh> has allwinner ever showed any communication with the community?
<wens> phh: a bit here and there, mostly with free electrons though
<phh> ok
<phh> well I understand a company prefers to talk to a company
