<fALSO> has anyone tried recent kernels on rockpro64 ?
<fALSO> last time I updated... the network was borked
<fALSO> ssh worked... but anyuthing that used more BW stoped working
<fALSO> wget... etc, started stuff at 1k/s and crawls until it stops

<sigmaris> 5.8-rc1 is working ~ok for me, networking is fine, only issue was lack of regulator support in panfrost devfreq
<sigmaris> https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/8a469ee35606ba65448d54e5a2a23302f7e79e3c was applied recently to fix a performance issue with networking that sounds similar to yours
<fALSO> AWESOME
<fALSO> is this in any rc now?
<fALSO> gonna build the kernel right now :)
<fALSO> thanks sigmaris
<sigmaris> seems like it's in the 5.7 release
<fALSO> im using a kernel config from your repo :)
<robmur01> plus you only need to update the DTB, not the kernel ;)
<fALSO> gonna see if you have a new one :)
<sigmaris> feel free to try https://github.com/sigmaris/linux/tree/ci-5.8-rc1-rkvdec-v2 - that's the kernel I am using
<fALSO> i installed a jenkins @home in a home server
<fALSO> and made some recipes that build atf, uboot and kernel
<fALSO> i get a tar.gz with everything ready to "upgrade" :-)
* robmur01 runs stock distro kernels but never uses the distro-packaged DTBs, even the ones I upstreamed...
<fALSO> =)
<fALSO> i run gentoo on my rockpro64
<fALSO> "made it" myself

<stikonas> fALSO: recent kernels seem to work fine for me
<stikonas> in older kernels networking was borked unless you disabled tx checksumming
<fALSO> i also have mine, with the OS on a HDD
<fALSO> via USB
<fALSO> dont know if that could cause anything weird also
<fALSO> but ill report in a few hours :)
<fALSO> yes,,, i read about that ethtool
<stikonas> I just use 5.7.10 kernel on gentoo
<fALSO> but the rockpro had no network , so i couldnt download it ;-)
<stikonas> and that kernel is actually located on M.2 SSD
<stikonas> I got rid of my eMMC card now :)
<fALSO> nice
<fALSO> i dont have emmc
<fALSO> just sd card
<stikonas> can directly boot from U-boot on SPI to M.2 SSD
<fALSO> awesome!
<stikonas> M.2 SSD is actually cheaper than eMMC :D
<fALSO> how is the m2 ssd connected?
<fALSO> is there an extra board?
<stikonas> got 256 GB for ~£40
<stikonas> yeah, I used some pci->m.2 adapter
<fALSO> awesome
<fALSO> are the speeds good?
<stikonas> yeah, definitely faster than before
<fALSO> no extra power suplly or antyhing ?
<stikonas> I needed latest U-boot 2020.07...
<stikonas> no, nothing special
<fALSO> damn... im gonna buy one of those :)))))))
<stikonas> so one thing that is definitely faster, is swap :D
<stikonas> before if my rockpro64 started swapping ,that was it, reboot time
<stikonas> on M.2 the system is still responsive
<stikonas> yeah, this one works, I have some other one too, I think they all work
<stikonas> I probably got it from somewhere else, not pine shot
<fALSO> the price is cool, going to see the shipping
<stikonas> (cheaper shippping fees if you buy locally)
<fALSO> yap, i would preffer at least in europe
<stikonas> which country?\
<fALSO> going to do some searches, thanks for the hints
<fALSO> im from Portugal
<stikonas> ok, I bought from UK...
<fALSO> pt, es , uk
<fALSO> yap, i buy a lot from ebay UK
klokken has joined #linux-rockchip
<fALSO> nice. thanks!
<stikonas> anywya, you can find something in europe...
<fALSO> just a common pci expresso to m2 will work
<fALSO> OK
<stikonas> and obviously, this only works with nvme, wouldn't work with M.2 SATA SSDs
<fALSO> yes, im going for nvme
<fALSO> its PRETTIER
<fALSO> :)
<stikonas> I don't know why they have the same form factor...
<stikonas> for two incompatible devices...
<stikonas> oh, so in my setup, I flashed U-boot to SPI, and then on NVMe I simply have EFI partition with grub (although systemd-boot should also work)
<stikonas> I didn't even need to do anything with device tree files, U-boot now ships new enough
<fALSO> i have the kernel , uboot etc on the sdcard
<fALSO> and then the root is on an external hdd via usb
<stikonas> oh ok...
<stikonas> well, my setup is more similar now to traditional box with BIOS
<fALSO> never used grub on a ARM board
<fALSO> and openrc for life ;-))))))))))
<stikonas> is it better than shepherd? :D
<fALSO> LOL shepher-d
<fALSO> LOL
<fALSO> ill be back in a while, lunch time!
