<a-bateman_>
Sorry. I didn’t realize every time I leave the app it disconnects me. Not used to irc yet.
<a-bateman_>
It’s also giving me read errors.
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman_: usually to stay connected people use irc bouncers
<OutBackDingo>
anyway.... whats up

I think I've figured out the issue as to why it kept disconnecting me. Apparently it did not like ip changes. My job kept me moving and giving me a different ip everytime I moved to a different location.

how ya been ?
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: im here
<OutBackDingo>
seems like your haavving connection issues
<a-bateman_>
Yeah. I’m not even sure if my messages were going through.
<a-bateman_>
I’ve never used irc before today.
<OutBackDingo>
why you keep dropping you on a chhinese vpn ?
<a-bateman_>
I’m not even on a vpn. My job made me move around the site a bit and it kept giving me a new ip so I figured that must be the issue
<fkr>
OutBackDingo: great actually. Despite all other IT-related stuff, my son was born eight weeks ago ;)
<fkr>
OutBackDingo: how about you?
<OutBackDingo>
fkr: congrats
<OutBackDingo>
doing ok living in Netherlands now
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: so whats your questions
<a-bateman_>
I was curious why the project was more or less abandoned (at least that’s the outward perspective), what was the cause of it and if it’s worth trying to revive or at least Frankenstein into another project.
<a-bateman_>
I wanted to work on it but I also started researching to start my own hobby OS and thought maybe I’d check back in on this and try to learn from it and maybe revive it if it’s worth it.
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: essentially NextBSD was the start of a base os with some features from OS X, suck as launchd and freinds... ported to FreeBSD as it were by IX systems, primary goals were to integrate it into FreeNAS 10 back then
<OutBackDingo>
where jkh, jacob, matt macy, me, fkr and a few others worked on the OS for some time... about a little more then a year
<OutBackDingo>
there were some successes, launchd did rtun some libs were brougt in... a few other features.... then things kinda turned south.... dont need to get intro the why of it really.
<OutBackDingo>
but basically thats the jist of it...
<OutBackDingo>
fkr: anythhing to add ?
<a-bateman_>
Yeah. I mean when I first heard about everything being ported it sounded like a great idea and people were talking about it but then it seemed to disappear.
<OutBackDingo>
well... short history, personel changes and priorities changed within IX systems
<OutBackDingo>
t5here was/is still some good work in the tree, however it would need to be completed, it was buildable and installable there forr a time
<a-bateman_>
I understand. I believe IX maintains TrueOS. I use a fork of it now.
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: yeah, that was all part of the priorities changing... dont think its even still called TrueOS anymore is it ?
<a-bateman_>
Do you think it’d be worth putting any work into as a hobby over writing a new OS from scratch?
<OutBackDingo>
it would be great to see it completed, but it would need a group of people
<a-bateman_>
They have TrueOS as the server only version and Project trident as the desktop. GhostBSD is now based off of TrueOS now also.
<OutBackDingo>
writing one from scratch, you be better of finishing minix :)
<a-bateman_>
Maybe I’ll try recruiting some people even if it’s a bit of a touch and go thing. I’d love to see it go somewhere.
<OutBackDingo>
well the guy responsible for GhostBSd also works at IX, or did when iw as thhere also
<OutBackDingo>
we might have to raise jakob, and maybe matt from the dead... see if they would be interested, i doubt jkh would still
<a-bateman_>
No really a fan of the minix/minix clones. I thought I’d write my own for the experience. I have a lot of experience with BSD but I think there are improvements that could be made.
<OutBackDingo>
fkr might be
<OutBackDingo>
yes, i agree BSD could use some improvements
<a-bateman_>
I didn’t know The GhostBSD guy worked there.
<OutBackDingo>
another reason DragoinFlyBSD exists today
<a-bateman_>
I will say that if anyone was getting into reviving it I don’t have much experience and planned on using it to learn.
<OutBackDingo>
yeahh we were all employed or consultants for IX systems when we did the work, except for fkr who did contribute
<a-bateman_>
I’m not a fan of dragonfly. I ran into all kinds of issues just like I did with openbsd.
<a-bateman_>
That’s awesome. I never had the opportunity to work for a place like that. The tech jobs around here are pretty sparse.
<OutBackDingo>
openbsd is pretty stable, i find ffreebsd more useaable, if you want take a look also at hardenedbsd
<a-bateman_>
I was looking at hardened BSD but there’s a lot of warnings going around because of the steps it has to take that you could run into a lot of issues with things running.
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: its about proper coonfiguratioon mostly
<OutBackDingo>
and yes security mechanisms do sometimes require further configurations
<OutBackDingo>
but it works, i run it on my servers no problems, just get through the learning process as with anything new
<OutBackDingo>
also a great group of people to help in their irc channel #hardenedbsd
<a-bateman_>
Understandable. I’ve configured FreeBSD to be pretty secure. I’ll check into that when I pull one of my old laptops out of the moving container.
<OutBackDingo>
as for NextBSD ... fork it and continue
<a-bateman_>
Nice. Thank you. I didn’t realize irc would be so useful. Everyone seems to be on telegram these days so when I started linking up with people that’s where I ended up.
<OutBackDingo>
im sure NextBSd as far as IX Systems is concerned is dead
<OutBackDingo>
pfffttt real unix users use irc
<OutBackDingo>
telgram is a jooke
<a-bateman_>
I’m going to fork it. I’m starting a telegram group and going to try to recruit people through there as I already have connections.
<a-bateman_>
Telegram has some upsides but I never really chatted with other programmers or tech people until someone pointed it out to me. I tended to work alone lol
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: i think youll get more mileage with an irc group also
<OutBackDingo>
youud be surprised at hhow much conversation takes place in irc
<a-bateman_>
I’ll start one on there and on irc and try to bridge the two. It seems like it’s all young guys on telegram.
<a-bateman_>
I kind of thought irc had fallen to the side of the road honestly.
<OutBackDingo>
i didnt even know that a FreeBSd telgram group existed
<OutBackDingo>
nope still well alive and kicking
<OutBackDingo>
i mean you have whhat slack, gitter, telegram, riot, mattermost so many to keep track of
<a-bateman_>
I don’t think one exists. At least I haven’t found one. They have one for clinl some OS these guys are working on to dethrone Linux but otherwise it’s more about C/C++ and other languages.
<OutBackDingo>
ill be here... with the others in irc
<OutBackDingo>
LOL dethrone linux hahahahahahha goood luck
<a-bateman_>
It’s a little crazy out there with everything being fragmented like that. One of the reasons I used to stick to myself lol
<OutBackDingo>
ill stay in the bsd world
<a-bateman_>
Oh I know. I watch the group because it’s entertaining. They already had one implosion and one of the guys left to start another OS to dethrone Linux.
<OutBackDingo>
what os is that
<a-bateman_>
It’s called CLINL. I’ll try to find a link to their website.
<OutBackDingo>
last commit 4 months ago 2018-12-14
<OutBackDingo>
LOL
<a-bateman_>
They did a lot of chatting about it telegram off and on. Ever since it started fracturing I haven’t seen as much activity.
<OutBackDingo>
c'ya..... feels dead to me already
<a-bateman_>
Yup. It’s entertaining though to see infighting so early on.
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: wel for NextBSd recommend forking it, then MFC'ing ffrom CURRENT fix the mis-merges and get it to build again, then move forward
<fkr>
OutBackDingo: no, nothing to add
<fkr>
(sorry, am a bit lagging ;)
<a-bateman_>
Ok, I really appreciate the chat. It’s nice to get to hear from the guys who actually worked on the project.
<fkr>
OutBackDingo: do you still do work for IX?
<OutBackDingo>
im actually surprised to see the likes of bdrewery and dmilith in here
<OutBackDingo>
didnt know the channel even existed
<OutBackDingo>
fkr: nope
<OutBackDingo>
i left 2015ish
<OutBackDingo>
well ermm 2016 it was
<OutBackDingo>
as has jkh and jakob
<OutBackDingo>
i belive a few others are gone also
<fkr>
ok, i noticed when jkh left
<fkr>
i will be back later tonight, here it is 5 in the afternoon and awesome weather outside, so I will see to catch some sunlight for a change ;)
<a-bateman_>
Take it easy.
<OutBackDingo>
fkr: k good seeing you aagain
<OutBackDingo>
well talking to you anyway
<OutBackDingo>
:)
<fkr>
:)
<OutBackDingo>
yeah my last commmit was 12/31/2015 db5ee7e1b9ffb5d366e6bf2b192f504ab2e2a81a
<a-bateman_>
To nextbsd?
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman: yes
<OutBackDingo>
i see some commit merging work from FreeBSD current up until 4/2016 though just merges
<OutBackDingo>
so its been 3 years really since its been touched, and its 35,000 plus commits behind FreeBSD CURRENT
<OutBackDingo>
though its probably capable of being brought up to speed it is just work
<OutBackDingo>
there mighht also be some branches in TrueOS that i had worked on previously
<a-bateman_>
What I figured I’d do it get it to build and run. Then worry about playing catch up.
<OutBackDingo>
jakob and mmacy did the bulk of the work along with sean
<a-bateman_>
Ok. If they ever hop in here maybe I’ll be able to get a pointer or two from them.
<a-bateman_>
A lot of people seem to be pretty hostile towards FreeBSD nowadays though. It’ll take a bit to recruit new faces.
<OutBackDingo>
hows that, whos hostile ?
<OutBackDingo>
alot of linux people maybe
a-bateman has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<a-bateman_>
Yup. Linux guys and they’re he majority of people. I run into. I know a bunch of guys who use Linux out here but literally never met another person in real life who uses any BSD.
<a-bateman_>
I’ve even tried applying for the few tech jobs that would benefit from BSD and they all seem to want Linux, Windows or Mac developers
<OutBackDingo>
sure there is alot of linux but FreeBSD workl is still existant
<OutBackDingo>
there are hhuge commercial companies that run it in their infrastructure, next time a linux person say whats FreeBSD, ask them what powers NetFlix....
<OutBackDingo>
its FreeBSD
<a-bateman_>
I’ll have to look further out then. I don’t even know if I have any type of experience close enough to get a job with it.
<OutBackDingo>
maybe harder too find, but they exist
<a-bateman_>
Oh I know it powers a lot of the world.
<OutBackDingo>
heck the Nintendo Switch is FreeBSD :)
<a-bateman_>
If you don’t mind me asking, what type of a background was needed to work at a big place like IX? I mean I have an associates tech degree but I’ve been programming and doing a ton of tech stuff since I was like 10.
<OutBackDingo>
LOL IX isnt big at all... big name, small company
<a-bateman_>
I thought the Switch just used some userland BSD stuff. I’ll have to look into it again lol. I know it powered the PS3/PS4
<a-bateman_>
Oh really? I’ve seen the name around a lot so I figured they were big time lol
<OutBackDingo>
contribute to FreeBSd / trueOS or the likes do enouugh good worrk gets you noticed
* OutBackDingo
thinks I need a new keyboard
<a-bateman_>
Sounds good. Looks like I need to double down on my efforts.
<OutBackDingo>
a-bateman_: just keep doing what your good at... contrinute where you can
<a-bateman_>
I won’t buy a new keyboard. I’ll just buy used replacements for my old thinkpad keyboards
<OutBackDingo>
actually my hands are tired, and i have a few sticky keys
<a-bateman_>
I will. I have a lot left to learn but nextbsd will be a good starting point.
<OutBackDingo>
we all have alot left to learn
<OutBackDingo>
tech changes constantly
<a-bateman_>
Yeah. I’ve been decent at keeping up. That’s a good point. I have a small.. more microscopic.. tech business and I’m holding a class for a few people today. To teach them the basics on c++.
<a-bateman_>
I’ve been decent with keeping up with the changes but it keeps changing more and more quickly it seems.
<OutBackDingo>
we all have to keep up
<a-bateman_>
I agree. Only way to get anywhere.
