daniels: Bwap?
* alyssa
tries to lighten her CL series.
<alyssa>
Meanwhile time to relook at UBOs
<alyssa>
For the nth time
<alyssa>
You know let's just focus on getting UBOs working solidly
<alyssa>
We can circle back to CL after, this'll be a good prereq.
<alyssa>
okay my laptop is definitely getting slower over time
<alyssa>
what gives
<alyssa>
this isn't supposed to happen on linux
<alyssa>
o ok
<alyssa>
Though seriously if anyone knows why disk access just suddenly stalls up and then freezes everything
<alyssa>
do tell
<alyssa>
Wear and tear on the eMMC? Low RAM? Something else?
<anarsoul>
do you have discard enabled?
<alyssa>
Bwah?
<anarsoul>
mount / -o remount,discard
<anarsoul>
also fstrim /
<anarsoul>
(and other mountpoints)
<alyssa>
fstrim: /: the discard operation is not supported
<anarsoul>
darn
<anarsoul>
old eMMC?
<alyssa>
I dunno
<alyssa>
the remount worked
<alyssa>
and placebo effect says things are magically faster ;p
<anarsoul>
but probably does nothing
<alyssa>
Bwap.

(and indeed it doesn't)
<alyssa>
ugh what even
<anarsoul>
get yourself a PBP? :) it has replaceable eMMC
<alyssa>
Beep.
<urjaman>
i looked at the PBP like yesterday (or this morning) and i was like the harder i looked the less i was interested right now :P
<urjaman>
also, somebody has to test the C201 :P
<alyssa>
:p
<alyssa>
urjaman: Are you recommending the C201 for its eMMC? ;)
<urjaman>
yeah umm the eMMC actually works fine so far but the microSD i need to use to actually have anything other than rootfs on it is notably laggy
<alyssa>
Uh huh
<anarsoul>
urjaman: what's wrong with it?
<anarsoul>
(with PBP)
<urjaman>
a list of little things, it has a broadcom wifi, the eDP panel is 6-bit, the battery system is a single gigantic lipo cell (i'd have prerred a 2S 8.4V setup)
<alyssa>
don't those all apply to c201
<urjaman>
(and well while it is very big for a single cell, eg. i think the C201 actually has more Wh)
<urjaman>
the C201 has 8.4V 5 point something Ah battery but other than that yeah, but that was just it ... i was like "seems like the same stuff"
<urjaman>
1080p fine yeah but also it is a bigger thing and an RK3399 yeah is likely faster but i assume both of those (and the fact that everything (backlight, usb) needs to be boosted up from the 4ish V battery) mean the C201 will run longer
<urjaman>
but yeah in pictures it looks really cool
<urjaman>
the amount of googling needed to figure the wifi is a broadcom-based module was a bit much tho :P
<urjaman>
oh also stuff like they put in an USB 2.0 hub chip in it and used only 2 of the ports it provided ... man you could've had USB ports for days
<alyssa>
I dunno
<alyssa>
Being RK3399 is worth it
<alyssa>
The difference from Rk3288 to Rk3399 is night and day
<urjaman>
(but then maybe your power system would've been struggling with giving power to 4 USB ports in addition to everything else... goes back to the single cell)
<phh>
(I personnally switched from C201 to C101PA to switch to rk3399)
<alyssa>
phh: worth it? :)
<urjaman>
yeah i've been thinking about the bob too
* alyssa
flips hair
<urjaman>
:P
<phh>
alyssa: 16GB eMMC is still a nightmare...
<phh>
(sorry i'm still using chromeos :P)
<phh>
c101pa feels less cheap than c201, I personly like the form factor, I always have it in my backback
<phh>
battery life is not as good as c201
<phh>
(still pretty good compared to laptops you can get in that price-range)
<urjaman>
also i was like i dont want an UK layout (that comes with the ISO keyboard) but also i'm not that hot about the ANSI keyboard (the US layout is otherwise fine ... and well my C201 is US/ANSI too so ...)
<urjaman>
i mean i suppose i could relabel the ISO for a finnish layout somehow...
<urjaman>
(but then the finnish keyboard layout is not very fun to code with)
<anarsoul>
urjaman: broadcom wifi is better than realtek :)
<urjaman>
the random usb realtek that i have on the C201 as a backup device works better than the broadcom :P
<urjaman>
(but really, if i had to pick something i guess it'd be ath9 ... not that any wifi is that great these days -.-)
<urjaman>
maybe a modularization of the SDIO interface for a wifi "slot" (like they did with the eMMC) could be neat
<urjaman>
but sorry this is so off-topic

<anarsoul>
yeah, modular wifi would be nice
