<theartisan>
have spent today getting really annoyed with sites as i moved all my passwords to 30+ characters… why do so many sites have a password length cap? :/

theartisan, : god bless banks. 8 characters max. do token/second device support.
<kseifried>
theartisan: my starcraft account has stronger auth than my bank. ... sigh.
<theartisan>
kseifried: now that you mention it… crap… i never really thought of that
<kseifried>
hahaha yup
<theartisan>
at least the uk banks have 2 factor auth on making a transaction
<kseifried>
and the best part is the bank account username is almost always your account #
<kseifried>
I hope you never write checks/do wire xfers =)
<kseifried>
yeah TAN codes, my DB account is such a pain
<kseifried>
what cracks me up is to change my address they want me to scan my passport in and email it to them.
<kseifried>
"can you guarantee my password info won't be leaked?" "what do you mean?" "argh"
<theartisan>
because photoshop does not exist
<kseifried>
that too
<kseifried>
sadly they actually do have an office in this country, just 4 hour flight away.
<kseifried>
international banking is such a cluster fuck unless you're the 1%
<theartisan>
the 1% is not hard to get into, just go contracting :)
<kseifried>
well sadly I'm technically in the 1%
<kseifried>
but you know what I mean
<kseifried>
HSBC, minimum balance when I checked was 250k.
<theartisan>
the 0.1%?
<kseifried>
yeah
<kseifried>
there ya go
<theartisan>
250k what? USD?

im not sure how i would survive out of the UK long term, i tend to just put everything on credit cards, inter bank rates on currency conversion is better than most money changing shops will give
<theartisan>
im guessing that doesnt scale
<kseifried>
have you seen the movie "margin call"?
<theartisan>
i dont think so
<kseifried>
its very very well done
<kseifried>
premise is large finance house
<kseifried>
bunch of people get fired, the one guy,m head of risk management
<kseifried>
hands off his final project to his underling
<kseifried>
the underling runs the numbers and figures out the mortgage backed securities are fucked
<kseifried>
so all hands on deck, emergency, the sum of it is they sell everything off the next day at a loss in <3 hours to survive
<kseifried>
conversations like "500 million at 65%? ok sold" and boom, 10 seconds go by and a half billion just moved around
<kseifried>
makes me realize that trying to "compete" on any level with these firms in the stock market/etc is utter insanity
<kseifried>
theartisan: not to mention things like solarflare, low latency/high performance ethernet network cards for HFT, no pricing info on the website (they ain't cheap)
<theartisan>
i have friends who have manually figured the optimal routing of traffic for financial companies
<theartisan>
to avoid earthquake hotspots and such in japan
<theartisan>
and get the data back to london as fast as possible, i had to do a double take on that, earth quakes causing latency problems.
<theartisan>
those companies have crazy setups, there are some buildings in london that are actually giant server farms and only look like offices from the outside as they were in good spots to wire up to the exchange
<theartisan>
but, all the time they are making stupid amounts of money, and london remains the financial capital of the world, it bodes well for the value of the house im buying later this year. bricks and mortar have always been the safest investment.
<kseifried>
theartisan, : did you ignore news for the last 5 years from the US real estate market? =)
<kseifried>
my plan, spend it on my kids, guilt trip them into taking care of me when I'm old
<theartisan>
no, but although parts of london have lost value in housing, theres always enough foreign money pouring into london
<kseifried>
ahh true
<kseifried>
like vancouver
<kseifried>
all the asian money fucked it up
<kseifried>
minimum is 1million for a shack now
<theartisan>
mostly arab money at the moment, projects like the shard
<kseifried>
I find it odd
<kseifried>
how poorly most areas handle growth
<kseifried>
I suppose it's to be expected, humans always seem to make a mess of things
<theartisan>
london has always been like this
<kseifried>
yah
<theartisan>
im looking at 2 bedroom places at half a mil GBP
<kseifried>
like row house, no garage/etc?
<theartisan>
more appartment
<kseifried>
gotcha
<theartisan>
not like i need a garage/etc as nobody drives in london :)
<kseifried>
well no sane person
<theartisan>
and if i want outside i can head to a park
<kseifried>
it made me laugh
<kseifried>
some BBC news thing on the snow/etc
<kseifried>
and some expert was advising people to get winter tires, totally fair
<kseifried>
where the hell do you keep the usmmer set though
<theartisan>
kseifried: most people who drive in london have a garage or a lockup
<kseifried>
from what I read most park on the street
<theartisan>
yeah, because the garages are full of crap
<theartisan>
but tbh winter tiers in london is retarded
<kseifried>
right
<theartisan>
it only snows a few weeks a year
<kseifried>
they were talking ont he highways/etc
<theartisan>
and they dont have the infrastructure to make the roads safe
<kseifried>
sowing the mass carnage that blizzard caused =)
<kseifried>
well
<kseifried>
according to top gear
<kseifried>
you could refit all the combins with flame throwers and fix that
<theartisan>
hah, those guys be crazy
* kseifried
wonders how bad things would get if you actually put Jeremy Clarkson in charge of transport with no oversight
<theartisan>
and its agaisnt the law to drive a combine on a motor way
<theartisan>
have you seen who we have as mayor?
<kseifried>
that's why you just put Messieur Clarkson in charge with no oversight =)
<kseifried>
Boris?
<kseifried>
or has it changed?
<theartisan>
yeah
<theartisan>
boris rocks, he gets votes purely on the basis of being a clown
<kseifried>
I no longer read world news really other than the economist
<kseifried>
I find it mostly doesn't matter for me :P
<kseifried>
honestly at this point I'd vote for the "fuck you" candidate
* theartisan
doesnt bother with any papers
<kseifried>
I'm fed up completely
<kseifried>
the only politicos I respect are like the mayor of calgary
<theartisan>
why do you think london has a clown for a mayor :)
<kseifried>
seriously, this guy rocks
<kseifried>
he's like "potholes are not a political issue. there is no liberal or democratic basis for pothole policy. we just need to fill the damn things"
<kseifried>
and he actually responds to tweets
<kseifried>
like .. properly. not "well we think babies are important and we plan to make a subcommittee to study a 5 point plan to reccomend a color for the binder to the sub-sun-commitee to decide on snacks for a meeting to think about baby policy"
<theartisan>
you mean he doesnt know what hes doing and hasnt hired a media team to manage his twitter?
<kseifried>
prety much
<kseifried>
he's actually a human being
<kseifried>
if I ran the world anyone running for any position of power would be required my law to explain ALL their policy decisions to a group of 7 year olds AND get them to agree.
<theartisan>
"im going to take all the money and give you crayons"
ldk has quit [*.net *.split]
<kseifried>
then that has to be the policy
<kseifried>
=)
<theartisan>
hrm, it appears to be half three in the morning, i should probably sleep.
<kseifried>
go read eastern standard tribe =)

theartisan: worse than a password cap is passes that silently truncate your pw for you
<dstufft>
and I die inside everytime that happens because I can only imagine they are storing the PW plaintext in a mysql DB
<kseifried>
that's how I noticed my bank was limiting to 8. in the mobile app I accidentally typed in only part and hit enter and it worked :P
<dstufft>
it wouldn't be so bad if they limited it upon reauth
<dstufft>
the ones i've seen I went and tried to log in
<dstufft>
and got told it was the wrong pw
<dstufft>
then I get to play the game where I truncate my pw by 1 char at a time until it works :(
<dstufft>
Which is why I can only asusme they are storing it plaintext in MySQL, because surely if they programatically truncated it they would do it on input too...

all banks seem to do "enter character X Y and Z of your password" which means plaintext
