<mpapis>
rhinux, there were few bugs in this version and ubuntu never updated over it, we (rvm) are currently at 1.18.21 if I remember correctly
<rhinux>
@mpapis should I purge rvm and install it manually? or is there a Ubuntu PPA for actual rvm? ;-)
<mpapis>
rhinux, use instructions from the ticket
<rhinux>
ok

I wrote a proposal for RailsConf. I had some positive feedback, and some that experessed some valid concern. My response is like 2 pages long and desperately needs to be cut, but I don't have the heart to remove anything else as I love this topic like my life. I'm wondering if I can get someone to read my draft response?
<zzak>
two page proposal?
<mustmodify>
no
<mustmodify>
my proposal is shortish.
<mustmodify>
86 words
<mustmodify>
There's a "reviewer notes" section and one of the comments was overall positive but had a (valid) concern. It says you can email in responses... so I wrote one.
<mustmodify>
And I apparently couldn't stop writing.
<mustmodify>
And usually I would just sit on it for a week and then edit heavily, but I think they're making decisions before I'll have a chance to go back.
<zzak>
how long was the comment?
<mustmodify>
ha ha ha
<mustmodify>
their comment was "only a few months with the team?"
<mustmodify>
my response is currently 594 words. :)
<zzak>
whats the proposal?
<mustmodify>
are you on the team?
<mustmodify>
the review team?
<zzak>
no
<zzak>
but out of context that question doesnt make any sense to me
<mustmodify>
ok... because it's supposed to be all anonymous and stuff so I didn't want to violate ...
<mustmodify>
that threshold or whatever.
<zzak>
oh
<mustmodify>
sure

so I spent 3.5 months working with a team at NASA on a Rails project.
<mustmodify>
And I wanted to do a case study.
<zzak>
oh yah, the nasa guy
<mustmodify>
hm... maybe I should change my username to "the nasa guy."
<zzak>
is 3.5 months not long enough?
<zzak>
that question seems trollish imo
<mustmodify>
how so?
<zzak>
like people give talks on what they did for google summer
<zzak>
which is only 3 months
<zzak>
how is 3 months not long enough to garner your own opinion and share experiences
<mustmodify>
yeah.

my response would probably be "yup"
<mustmodify>
ha ha ha
<zzak>
A: "i spent 3.5 months with ..."; B: "only a few months?"; A: "yes"
<zzak>
what kind of question is that
<mustmodify>
How many months did you spend with them?
<mustmodify>
lol
<mustmodify>
anyway
<zzak>
yeah
<mustmodify>
thanks for that perspective.
<zzak>

hi @drbrain, same prob es yesterday: status webpages says up, gem install bundler dies with too many connection resets :(
<rhinux>
if there is a conn prob local here on my installation an laptop, I could try to boot from a virgin ubuntu dvd and try it again. Or do you have another idea?

and post this to the rubygems-developers ML

<qrush>
i'm not in charge of the client-side code, but other big changes have happened. changing require semantics is not going to be easy. providing a faster alternative might be feasible
<qrush>
at least to start, and prove what you're after

good to hear

jsaak: rubygems used to have symlinks to the installed location in site_lib
<drbrain>
jsaak: I see one rather major problem with this proposal
<drbrain>
if I have a dependency rake, ~> 10.0 I don't know which version of rake I will get
<drbrain>
this proposal will require me to know
markalanevans has joined #rubygems
<drbrain>
in ye olden days I think the symlink pointed to the latest version
<drbrain>
this may not be a compatible configuration due to dependencies

<drbrain>
rubygems tracks which gems have been "activated" (added to the load path) which pins a version and maintains a list of their dependencies
yerhot has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<drbrain>
rubygems will use the most restrictive dependency in the unresolved set before activating the gem
<jsaak>
(imho using multiple versions is silly, but i know we are not talking about this at the moment)
<drbrain>
more, most restrictive dependency for a gem from all the gems that depend on it in the current dependency tree
<jsaak>
thanks for the link, and the explanation, let me think :)
<drbrain>
so if you have "foo, ~> 2.0, < 2.9" from gem A and "foo ~> 2.4, >= 2.4.8" from gem B then the dependency used when foo is activated is >= 2.4.8, < 2.9
workmad3 has joined #rubygems
<drbrain>
this is determined at runtime as a consequence of, require 'foo'
<jsaak>
right, but activating two different versions is not possible, right? or is it?
<drbrain>
it is not possible
<jsaak>
i see
<drbrain>
if another gem is activated with "foo ~> 5" then an exception is raised
<vertis>
qrush I am now here
<jsaak>
i feel that this checks should not be on runtime, but on install time
<qrush>
i think we go it vertis :)
<drbrain>
jsaak: if I run applications with different dependency sets how does that work?
<jsaak>
you need a separate rvm container for it :)
<drbrain>
I don't have RVM
<drbrain>
rubygems must be very conservative with change, we can't dictate "use X!"
<jsaak>
yup, i feared that
<drbrain>
there is gemdeps support, and a flat install location like you are building could be built from it
<drbrain>
so, it's definitely possible to incorporate your work, but likely not as the default
<drbrain>
evan included the gemdeps stuff, but I haven't managed to tease much documentation out of him yet
<drbrain>
included -> committed
<drbrain>
it would probably also simplify the work you would need to do
<jsaak>
hmm
<drbrain>
I think the best way to move forward is to build a new command that accepts gemdeps input (Gemfile, gems.deps.rb, etc that rubygems 2 understands)
<drbrain>
then creates a flat install in ./flat_gems
<drbrain>
so only one thing needs to be added to $LOAD_PATH
<jsaak>
sounds like a plan!
<drbrain>
flat_gems is the first name I came up with, it's not a very good one
<drbrain>
also, this way you can get immediate adoption without waiting for the sometimes slow rubygems release process
