hey there, good evening! Long story short, I started a gem called 'freight' back in Nov 2019. I started coding my gem locally on my system while I tried to get rights to the gem name. Anyway, I gave up and created a new gem 'fr8'. I'm going to be slowly migrating pieces of code and pushing it up.
<ewanchic>
My question(s) are related to starting clean and on a good footing, and what's the latest trends in this. Example, ChangeLOG, CODE_OF_CONDUCT, should I blog in my code or not, etc.
<ewanchic>
I'm basically starting at 0.0.0, and thinking how to get to 0.0.1. I'm already at version 0.9.0 in 'freight'. I think I'm just having a mental block here, and this is my 1st public gem...heck it's my 1st gem
<ewanchic>
Does anybody have direction I should take to get started? Or ask me something so I can get my brain working.
<ewanchic>
... you know, I do have a question about storing my source code? github, gitlab (public), or something else? are devs moving away from github since MS purchase. (I'm not trying to start a flame war, thanks)
<ewanchic>
...OK, change of plan...I think...? I just now realized the I have ownership of 'freight' gem! No I have freight and fr8. I have to do some thinking here.

Hey, good day! So, I've got some general questions. 1st, I'm wondering if I should use github for my sourcecode, gitlab, or something else completely. Since MS purchased github, I see there is a small movement to migrate to gitlab. What do you all believe?
<havenwood>
ewanchic: I use GitHub. On a personal note, I'm very pleased that MS is committed to be carbon negative and plan to undo historical emissions by 2050. I despise that they host ICE. Some folk don't use corporate solutions, period.
<ewanchic>
havenwood: RLOL! That was really unexpected, but I like it. I'm probably showing my age here (^_^). I'm over 40 and I started in computers when I was 12. So I went from Mac (6800x), to the whole Dos 5 ->Win 3.1 (Os3 Warp) -> Win95/98/Me...etc. I'm a linux/debian/ubuntu guy now. I really liked what they did with VB6, MSOffice97 & 2000, and then instead of upgrading, the last 2 decades became a corp war with Java and a FUD war with linux
<ewanchic>
. Devs got pulled into it and stores of code was not upgraded, but just abandoned. I don't need to go into it...just that it was a deciding factor that pushed me faster into Linux, and into Ruby and with RoR.
<ewanchic>
havenwood: after vb6 (and it was very powerful), I didn't want to go into .NET. I thought IF is was going that direction, then why not go to Java instead. so, if I was moving away from VB6, it was going to be either: .NET (c++/c#), Java, or something else. Ruby (and Rails) became the something else I was looking for.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: Nice! The #ruby channel is a good one for Ruby or Rails generally, and is a great place to talk about gems.
<havenwood>
I'm also over 40 and remember DOS 5. I started with batch scripting.
<havenwood>
Good stuff!
<ewanchic>
havenwood: Awesome! Good to know I'm not the only one. We'll, I'll go repeat myself on the #ruby channel. Thank you for sharing your opinion. I like to hear all of these before weigh a decision.
