<hairwhale> Hi. I've been using the sandcats domain for a while now and want to switch to one of my owned domains
<hairwhale> I was hoping I could just create a subdomain that points to the sandcats one but that returns an error
<TimMc> hairwhale: Yeah, that would give you either a TLS error or a sandstorm error.
<TimMc> Sandstorm needs to know what base domain it is being served under (and can *only* be configured with one at a time) and also needs a TLS cert that matches that one domain.
<TimMc> It's not overly hard to get set up with a custom domain, but it's not as easy as just setting a CNAME.
<frigginglorious> @hairwhale it's super easy to install sandstorm on a server, if that's an option for you.
<TimMc> The two additional ingredients you need to use a custom domain are 1) a way to keep the domain pointed at the right IP address (I use freedns.afraid.org at the moment) and 2) a wildcard cert (either buy one or use Let's Encrypt for free, at the cost of some scripting).
