<kentonv> I'm now kentonv on libera.chat.
<dustyweb> kentonv: just gave you ops in #sandstorm there
<dustyweb> isd too
<dustyweb> with great power comes great foo
<JacobWeisz[m]> Lol, is isd registered nick over there now?
<kentonv> oof I am having connectivity issues, it seems some of the A records for irc.libre.chat just don't respond to me
<JacobWeisz[m]> I kinda imagine they have yet to get to the level of multiple servers and partnerships for that they had before.
<kentonv> and when I do get connected it drops often, and after some number of drops I end up trying to connect to an IP that doesn't work an which point I never reconnect...
<JacobWeisz[m]> They just put a global notice up, they're aware.
<kentonv> so should we change the topic over here to direct people to join the new one?
<blowfist> kentonv: I don't think that's a good idea... we don't want to attract too much the attention from the new "owners" and risk being banned or something
<JacobWeisz[m]> Not sure, we might want to wait until registered officially, and possibly the bridge being up. But I also worry we might just lose the ability to reach people here now if something dramatic happens this week.
<JacobWeisz[m]> It's possible they are monitoring topic changes.
<isd> My nick is registered over there, but I haven't been signing in -- I've been waiting for the matrix bridge.
<JacobWeisz[m]> Which nick is yours there?
<isd> I know a bunch of other folks use matrix too, so my thought was to wait for that before putting up a redirect announcement
<isd> ocdtrekkie: isd
<blowfist> at least cloaks are easy to get over there
<blowfist> you just join #libera-cloak and type something like !cloakme
<isd> (just signed in)
<kentonv> TBH if they were to hostile take over our channel just because we put up a redirect in the topic, I'd blog about it and probably get on HN and that would be great for us.
<isd> Yeah, I think a topic redirect is a good idea, I just want to wait until matrix users can get on before pulling the trigger.
<kentonv> yeah that makes sense
<JacobWeisz[m]> I sent the form in, can I get a +o there? (I don't know if they'll wonder why someone put it in who isn't)
<JacobWeisz[m]> The IRC Matrix Bridge channel has a SoonTM bot to answer any mention of Libera.Chat, lol.
<JacobWeisz[m]> kentonv: Forwarded you mail.
<kentonv> the more I read about the freenode situation the more I think this Andrew Lee guy is basically well-meaning but *completely* out-of-touch, and a terrible communicator to boot. What a waste.
<kentonv> gonna guess he grew up very very rich. Didn't have to work, but became an entrepreneur because that's what rich kids do. Wanted to do good deeds with his money, latched onto FOSS and freenode as a place he could do that. But never really understood any of it. The way he writes about it is very uncanny valley.
<JacobWeisz[m]> Yeah, I think it's less that he has nefarious plans, and more that he fails to recognize that you don't have to be in charge to be a positive influence.
<JacobWeisz[m]> And that FOSS people do not react well to people coming in and taking control.
<kentonv> well I think he really does think he's thwarting a hostile takeover
<JacobWeisz[m]> Most people believe they are the heroes of their story.
<JacobWeisz[m]> And that's kinda where I expect the problem to arise: He may take increasingly extreme measures to try to "protect" Freenode.
<kentonv> I mean, clearly he's already destroyed it.
