<whitequark> wpwrak: i am liking your dof patch a lot.
<GitHub> [solvespace] marthinwurer commented on issue #260: Ability to edit shortcuts would be really nice. It would be nice to have a menu like JetBrain's IDEs, with the ability to select default key maps for other software as well. Those can probably be imported and exported and croudsourced, with the most-used defaults included in master. https://github.com/solvespace/solvespace/issues/260#issuecomment-425213491

<swivel> Is there a trick for flipping an object 180 degrees on its constrained normal when you've added a 'same orientation' constraint on normals but it's flipped on that axis?

<swivel> it seems like once I go down a flipped 'same orientation' constraint, nothing I can do can get the orientation where I want it, everything just results in unsolvable constraints - even things which seem obviously solvable. But then if I start over, import the two objects, and do the 'same orientation' again but from a different perspective in the viewport, sometimes I can get the correct orientation
<swivel> but it seems like a dice roll - and once that happens correctly I have no problem getting the other constraints added to bring the objects together as desired.

<whitequark> swivel: you need to point the normals approximately in the right direction
<whitequark> grab a normal before constraining and drag it to rotate
<whitequark> you can point normals like -> -> or -> <- or <- -> etc
<whitequark> once you say "same orientation" solvespace selects the closest relative orientation that makes them parallel
<whitequark> and locks it in in the constraint
<whitequark> so you can't flip them anymore
<whitequark> also, it might be helpful to know that solvespace's "normals" are actually quaternions
<whitequark> not vectors
<whitequark> basically this means that a "normal" has a direction and also a rotation around the axis going through the direction
<whitequark> you can hit the 9 hotkey to rotate the model around a bit if dragging is slow
<swivel> Hmm, ok I'll keep that in mind.
<swivel> Doesn't it seem like it would be useful to have a hotkey for flipping about the constrained normal for when it's inverted?
<swivel> saves the trouble of having to fumble with things getting the normals "close" first, becaues in my limited experience the normals are either close as-is, or inverted
<swivel> or just hotkeys for rotating 90 degrees at a time about the various normals, independent of constraints
<swivel> does that already exist?
<swivel> i seem to really suck at orienting objects using the mouse and the normal arrows
<whitequark> swivel: does 9 not do what you want?
<whitequark> re: adding more hotkeys, we're sort of out of key
<whitequark> *keys
<swivel> it might
<swivel> is there a way to lock an objects orientation on a subset of dimensions?
<swivel> hm maybe the perpendicular constraint can achieve what I'm trying to do now, I'll shut up and just poke at the program.
<whitequark> you can use the other constraints
<whitequark> almost all solvespace constraints work in both 2d and 3d
<whitequark> if you're locked in workplane they work on projections if you select an entity not in workplane
<whitequark> if you're not they work as you'd expect in 3d
<swivel> thanks, that helps :)

<GitHub> [solvespace] prof-foster opened issue #354: Significant performance regression in macOS 10.14 https://github.com/solvespace/solvespace/issues/354
<GitHub> [solvespace] whitequark commented on issue #354: Unfortunately it is not possible for me to do any fixes to SolveSpace under macOS 10.14 because I do not own any Apple hardware and so I use a VM ([OSXKVM](https://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~somlo/OSXKVM/)) to do all development work and there's currently no way to run anything newer than 10.12 in a VM. Worse still, anything newer than 10.9 is absurdly slow when using
<GitHub> [solvespace] whitequark commented on issue #354: That said, if you could use Xcode to profile SolveSpace, I might be able to fix it without even having access to a macOS 10.14 machine. https://github.com/solvespace/solvespace/issues/354#issuecomment-425255938
