Hello, Recently found solvespace looks really cool! Thanks for open-sourcing it!
<whitequark>
hi
<ElegantDitto>
Hi, Quick question where would you point a new user after finishing the tutorials?
<whitequark>
mm, I'd say try designing something you need and ask questions once you get stuck
<ElegantDitto>
Well, I really wanna build some robots, I know I should start slow so I want to start making some small components. How would i make a gear for example?
<whitequark>
draw a single tooth and then rotate it
<ElegantDitto>
Oh of course!
<ElegantDitto>
Could i use linkages to check the meshing?
<whitequark>
mm, sure
<dalias>
:)
<dalias>
always nice when someone comes to say thanks to maintainers :)
<scalepale>
I was planning on lurking a bit, I also want to say thanks
<scalepale>
solvespace is without question the best CAD program I've ever used
<swivel>
scalepale: is it the only one you've used? :P
<dalias>
i think it's the nicest in terms of UI and underlying principles
<dalias>
but it lacks features to do a lot of "highly 3d" stuff
<dalias>
at some point i want to figure out how to cleanly integrate pulling results of dimensional constraints from solvespace into openscad
<dalias>
i'm mostly using openscad right now because i want to do stuff with threaded interfaces, helices, curved paths in 3d, etc.
<scalepale>
I've used a few others but as dalias said, the UI is consistent and intuitive which makes up for 80% of the experience
<scalepale>
I can do more with Fusion 360 or say Maya, but my god are the interfaces bad
<ElegantDitto>
It does need more attention i think, like from the maker/cad users. I mean it's good but freecad seems to be taking all the spotlight
<ElegantDitto>
I have no idea how to use that, but in solidspace i had the bracket thingy tutorial finished in 10 minutes and it shows the concept really well
<ElegantDitto>
Maybe get some linux influncer social media types the heads up? they might like it and spread the word :)

<mischief>
hi, im new also :)
<mischief>
i made a simple 2d thing
<mischief>
how would i export something usable by a cnc mill?
<whitequark>
depends on your mill, but try dxf export
<whitequark>
that's usually supported
<swivel>
i like the workflow solvespace encourages with assemblies composed from multiple files, it feels very natural coming from a software dev background
<ElegantDitto>
Okay quick question, i got a neat gear now. I was wondering what tool I should lookinto to make helical gears?
<ElegantDitto>
the lathe? or is their something more suited to making such parts?
<whitequark>
I don't think you can make a helical gear right now, but there is an open pull request to add a feature that can be used to make them, I think
<ElegantDitto>
are their any conflicts in the pr? i'm not scared of compiling stuff :)
<whitequark>
it doesn't really work yet, it's a proof of concept
<ElegantDitto>
Oh okay, great to hear stuff is being worked on :)
<ElegantDitto>
Oh since i got you here what features are being like worked on? I love to get the inside scoop on stuff
<whitequark>
I haven't spent a lot of time on solvespace recently, since my health hasn't been great
<ElegantDitto>
Oh that's unfortunate, take your time to get better and stuff! Softare < personal health
