<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> Can anyone here give me a hand? I cant get into my account. I have an email with my recovery code, I had what I thought was my secret key, but mine has lower case letters including the "s" which the login system tells me is wrong (maybe a stellar address rather than a sec key). I followed the docs on recovery, I found the email with my recovery code, but the login tells me the username is incorrect. I went t
<stellar-slack>
and it tells me my email is invalid, actually it tells me there is not account with that email (despite me looking at the email steller sent me in my inbox right now). I have additionally tried my other email addresses, all the same. This is killin me.
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> @burnteloi: you probably haven't upgraded to the new network. if you don't remember your password and you do have your old network secret seed (this with letter `s`) you can use our upgrade tool. what is your operating system?
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> win8 , but but am trying this online, not a local wallet, am I missing something here?
gitter-bot has joined #stellar
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> our old client (http://launch.stellar.org|launch.stellar.org) has the upgrade tool built in but since you can't login there you need to do it using your secret seed.
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> it will show help when you start it with just `stellar-upgrade`
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> I have to use the entire file name from a dos box, so [stellar-upgrade-windows-amd64 -upgrade] ?
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> yes, sorry
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> `stellar-upgrade-windows-amd64 upgrade` (no dash before `upgrade`)
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> okay enter secret seed ?
gitter-bot has joined #stellar
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> yes, the string that starts with `s`
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> lower case 's' ? not the secret key which apparently has an uppercase S
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> so you have a new network secret (the long string that starts with uppercase `S`)?
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> the lowercase s = old network, the uppercase S = the new network
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> no, I do not have a secret key as it is referred to on your website
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> secret seed , assuming we are talking the same thing, nope
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> you said: > but mine has lower case letters including the "s" which the login system tells me is wrong does it start with a lowercase `s`?
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> the key I have recorded starts with a lower case 's' and is 51 characters long
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> can you try to use it in `stellar-upgrade-windows-amd64 upgrade` when it asks for secret seed?
gitter-bot has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> is 51 characters the correct format?
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> so if I get this straight, the old secret keys started with a lower case s and the new upper case S ?
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> honestly, I don't remember the old secret seeds format but the upgrade tool will tell you if it's correct
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> okey thanks, tried it it gave me a pub key and sec key, now it is asking for a new network address where lumens will be sent to
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> ok, so it seems it worked. you can either use the the pub&sec key stellar-upgrade gave you or you can generate a new key pair. the key pair stellar-upgrade gave you is generated from your old network secret.
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> (before doing this make sure you saved/stored the new network key pair in a safe place)
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> dont understand, I have recorded the keys, but the process is not done, can I give it an exchange deposit address here or something else?
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> if you have your new network keys stored, then when it's asking for where to send lumens just give it a new network public key. you shouldn't send it to exchange at this point.
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> the public key, just to confirm
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> yes, the public key is the key you can give anyone and it's used to send *you* the lumens
gitter-bot has joined #stellar
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> you say "a new network public key" which is any new network key (ie lumen address) , but I can also use the output that the upgrade program just provided? Sorry to be a pain here, this is the confusing crap that kills adoption.
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> the upgrade program provided you with the new network key pair derived from the old network secret. you can use that one but also any other public key that belongs to you.
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> so at this point I should probably open a lumen wallet online somewhere (seeing as I cant log into the stellar site) and use that address, any recommended online wallets or is there a stellar QT desktop wallet as well?
gitter-bot has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> you can use centaurus or lobstr but we also created a simple tool https://www.stellar.org/account-viewer/ where you use your secret key to "login"
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> secret key doesn't work on account viewer, just hangs. I haven't finished the upgrade yet though....Very unsure about giving this program the same pub key it just outputted to me.
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> getting ahead of me here, still stuck on what address to input, I would really like to use my poloniex deposit address, any reason not to do this? Its not like I am mining to it.
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> you need to use memo to deposit to poloniex. it's not possible with upgrade tool.
<stellar-slack>
<burnteloi> dammit, jeepers. okay so feed it back the same pub key it just outputted then and hope for the best I guess
<stellar-slack>
<bartek> lunch, brb

<scott> Yeah, one of the first snacks/sweets we had in our first office were stroopwafels. Andrew and I had a daily ritual for a little bit there (with others joining in randomly) where we would share one. When randomly having one and talking about what we should call the smallest denominator, Jed (IIRC) offered up stroop as a joke and it stuck.
