<franks2> semantic error: while resolving probe point: identifier 'process' http://pastebin.com/7AuXC8Xk anyone know how i can fix this?
<drsmith> franks2: I'm confused by that script. Was '@httpd' defined somewhere?
<franks2> full script
<franks2> drsmith: yes
<drsmith> ok, first question - what does the following show: stap -vl 'process("/usr/sbin/apache2").mark("*")' report?
<drsmith> sorry, don't include the 'report?'
<franks2> root@snmp:~# stap -vl 'process("/usr/sbin/apache2").mark("*")'

<franks2> Tip: /usr/share/doc/systemtap/README.Debian should help you get started.
<franks2> drsmith: ^
<drsmith> ok, that means that systemtap didn't find any markers in /usr/sbin/apache2
<franks2> hmmm
<franks2> But I've installed dbgsyms
<drsmith> what version of systemtap do you have (stap -V)?
<drsmith> systemtap doesn't need debug symbols for markers (well, we would to decode some types perhaps, but not the marker itself)
<franks2> Systemtap translator/driver (version 2.9/0.165, Debian version 2.9-2ubuntu2 (xenial))
<drsmith> ok, that's fairly recent
<drsmith> let's try another way to see if there are markers in apache2
<drsmith> there's a readelf command to show the contents of the markers section, but I never can remember the command line details
<drsmith> hold on a sec and I'll try to dig it up
<drsmith> ah, there it is. Try: eu-readelf -n /usr/sbin/apache2
<franks2> root@snmp:~# readelf -x .note.stapsdt /usr/sbin/apache2
<franks2> readelf: Warning: Section '.note.stapsdt' was not dumped because it does not exist!
<franks2> oh
<drsmith> there you go - that executable doesn't have markers
<franks2> root@snmp:~# readelf -n /usr/sbin/apache2

<franks2> drsmith: does apache2 need to be re-compiled or smth?
<drsmith> franks2: Yes. To add the markers in, you'd need to recompile.
Meths has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<drsmith> You also might try looking for a newer distro version that might have the markers compiled in.
<franks2> Hmm Im already on ubuntu 16.04
Meths has joined #systemtap
<drsmith> You other option would be to try to find function calls that are close to where those markers are placed and probe them instead.
<drsmith> I meant see if your distro have a newer version of apache2
<franks2> aha
<franks2> thanks for your help :-) I will look into this
<drsmith> sorry I couldn't give you a better answer
<franks2> drsmith: It will get me on the correct path! :)

<drsmith> franks2: There are several different probe types supported by systemtap. Some need debuginfo, some don't.
<franks2> drsmith: aha, what is the name of the "thing" i need to compile apache with?
<drsmith> I don't really know (since I've never compiled it), but I'd look for a configure option that enables markers.
<drsmith> Markers are static instrumentation points compiled into software. Debuginfo isn't needed to find the markers, but is needed to decode types (if the markers arguments include a structure for instance).
