as far as i can remember.. in the early android days phones had some sort of bios (called fastboot) and recovery images on a separate partition. they were dd'ed from a file on the system partition every time you did a shutdown..

For Samsung devices, you basically take a stock ROM package (Which contains sbl, recovery, the system itself, kernel, etc.) and you use Odin to flash it on. As for where everything goes, that's done by the program automatically.

I have an issue on cm10, when downloading an update using update manager, at restart, cwm looks for the 'cmupdater' folder on the wrong sdcard so it fails to update automatically when it restarts
