devyn changed the topic of #elliottcable to: 22:53:14 <+whitequark> also there was a fragment about Swiss embassy being located on top of a 1000-ft pole, inside which there was a gigantic arms exhibit
<whitequark> "sorry, this content is not available"
<whitequark> oh, works with UK proxy
<whitequark> oh, that's actually nice

<vil> alexgordon: important question: is eggplant actually called bunglespleen in the UK?
<alexgordon> vil: no
<vil> dammit
<vil> that's a good word
<alexgordon> vil: it's called aubergine
<vil> that's only an ok word
<alexgordon> it doesn't contain "spleen" so it's less disgusting...
<vil> yeah it definitely sounds more edible
<joelteon> alexgordon: so when you hear "bag of chips", do you picture a brown paper sack full of french fries
<alexgordon> no
<alexgordon> I think of a bag of Kettle Chips
<joelteon> oh
<alexgordon> and chips are not french fries
<vil> I think of Lays because branding works
<alexgordon> vil: *walkers, and they're called crisps
<alexgordon> joelteon: whereas "chips" are fat and chunky, like this: http://db2.stb.s-msn.com/i/DE/C7D1F6AFB5218C6196C3A49E67AAAA_h498_w598_m2.jpg
<alexgordon> ironically, this distinction is mostly america's doing
<alexgordon> because before mcdonalds, people would have called "french fries" chips
<alexgordon> but because mcdonalds don't *sell* normal sized chips, and insist on calling them "fries", it became the new name for it
<alexgordon> now I want chips
<vil> lol mcdonalds
<purr> lol
<vil> branding works
<vil> and now I really want some fries and or chips
<joelteon> I see

<nuck> My life is consumed by traps
<nuck> And writing a new danbooru in not-rails

<joelteon> my nose hurts so much
<vil> what have you been doing with it?
<joelteon> it's running
<joelteon> and has been for two weeks
<nuck> vil: What is Condiot again?
<nuck> I've got a full load of projects. I'm the unofficial maintainer of pomf.se's PHP codebase
<nuck> And I'm trying to build a language with no idea what I'm doing. But that's obviously how I learn best, diving head first with no clue
<cuttle> nuck: what kind of language?
<nuck> implicit reactive graphics language
<nuck> Well, reactive language with a standard library geared towards graphics
<nuck> I got tired of rewriting my desktop widgets in 4 different languages for the people who wanted my designs on their WM
<nuck> Apparently Linux lacks in good designers
<cuttle> oh hell yeah reactive graphics
<cuttle> I love reactive stuff
<cuttle> tell me more about it
<nuck> haha
<nuck> It's poorly specified, I just figured that widgets ought to be reacting to changes in the system state
<nuck> Whether that be wifi status, volume, battery, whatever
<nuck> Instead of pinging every n ms
<nuck> And I have unique requirements: it needs to work in Lua, C, and JS
<nuck> https://gist.github.com/NuckChorris/7179752 this was the most recent what-it-should-look-like document, though I think I had some flaw I noticed like a month ago
<nuck> This was written a few months ago
<nuck> I'm not 100% sure on the type system still
<nuck> But I know I need reactive-imperative
<whitequark> why do you need a language?
<whitequark> it's incredibly simple to write a reactive library on top of an existing language
<whitequark> (my personal favorite is ocaml's react: http://erratique.ch/software/react/doc/React)
<whitequark> in fact, I would recommend you to take Scheme: it has existing compilers to C (Chicken), JS (there's a bunch) and a Lua one either exists or is trivial to write
<whitequark> and of course it has libraries for FRP
<whitequark> that sounds like an ideal solution for you
<nuck> hrm
* nuck shrugs
<purr> ¯\(º_o)/¯
<nuck> Part of this is for shits and giggles
<whitequark> well, either you have your own language, or you have something practically usable :p
<nuck> I like making things harder than they have to be. Easy solutions are boring solutions
