<emOne>
my idea was to have some non native kodi apps
<chewitt>
some of the libmali blobs we are (were) using are "gbm-wayland" so we have to compile libmali against wayland else the lib faults
<chewitt>
but otherwise it's unused in LE
<emOne>
ahh fair enough
<pragmaticenigma>
emOne: you realize the LibreElec is "Just enough OS for Kodi" ?? meaning you're probably going to have a hard time getting other applications working?
<emOne>
I do realise that yes
<emOne>
as of right now apps which run in the background work
<chewitt>
forking our codebase for other apps is highly encouraged :)
<emOne>
non gui apps
<emOne>
chewitt: awesome!!!
<chewitt>
our packaging might make it a bit of a slog, but it's possible
<chewitt>
a broader set of use-cases normally results in more robust code
<chewitt>
and usually some contributions coming back upstream
<emOne>
that is the beauty of it
<emOne>
there is someone on the forum that did an arcade emulator build of LE
<emOne>
he included all sorts of stuff
<emOne>
but it is an older version of LE
<chewitt>
there are several
<emOne>
yes I saw!
<chewitt>
and that's ignoring Lakka :)
<emOne>
the community is great
<emOne>
I thought I was doomed at the beginning trying to run libreelec on an amlogic arm device
<emOne>
but I find that it is actually quite good
<emOne>
I also read about other communities working on things like gpu drivers and panfrost
<emOne>
there is still hope for arm and open source software xD
<chewitt>
media performance with Amlogic mainline things still has a few too many rough edges
<chewitt>
but once those get polished, the underlying core OS is super easy to work with
<chewitt>
modern kernels are just easier to work with
<emOne>
oh yes absolutely
<emOne>
I guess it is also wiser from a security point of view to use the latest kernel
<emOne>
also being stuck with an old kernel just because propriatry drivers and software is written for it is not a good long term strategy
<emOne>
for anyone
<chewitt>
i'm not sure too many users care about that, it's more of a hidden bonus
<chewitt>
users only care that their video file plays
<chewitt>
simple creatures :)
<emOne>
lol hehe
* emOne
scratches his head and wonders why his divx .avi file won't play
<emOne>
apropros more advanced apps within kodi
<emOne>
I believe that has nothing to do with libreelec
<emOne>
I honestly believe kodi should implement a new and better app engine
<emOne>
at least for kodi 20 heh
<chewitt>
what do you mean by app engine?
<emOne>
native apps
<emOne>
that you can write with python inside kodi
<emOne>
which are decorated by the kodi skin/theme
<chewitt>
python is only one language that Kodi supports
<chewitt>
it's possible to write native add-ons in c++, rust, lua
<emOne>
I don't mean the coding language per se
<emOne>
but the feature set of the native apps
<chewitt>
the GUI stuff is just decoration
<emOne>
the gui stuff feels like it is from the pre-iphone era
<emOne>
chewitt: I mean the general feel of native apps
<chewitt>
have a look at the Plex add-on to see what can be done
<emOne>
ooh! thanks for the suggestion! I will take a look
<chewitt>
most add-on developers aren't prepared to expend the effort to really customise things
neoweb has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<chewitt>
the Plex add-on is an example of a commercial entity which wanted an add-on that used their common user experience
<emOne>
with an advanced SDK where these advanced features exist it will make it easier for devs imo
neoweb has joined #libreelec
<chewitt>
the SDK kind of exists, but people need to use it :)
<chewitt>
you also need to understand that Kodi is not a company with a product
<emOne>
I have read the documentation for kodi app development .. a lot of it is boiler plate code
<emOne>
yes ofc
<chewitt>
there is no product management or product marketing team
<emOne>
chewitt: well, if I ever do code a more advanced app environment for kodi I will be sure to make a push/pull request
<chewitt>
just a collection of developers with their own personal use-cases and interests that happen to overlap on the same codebase; and who like a beer together once a year
<emOne>
awesome
<chewitt>
anarchy inc. :)
<emOne>
yes I know. It is a great hobby project
<emOne>
enigma 2 used to be my favourite OS for embedded type devices
<emOne>
because kodi was simply too intense for those devices
<emOne>
but I did have a modded xbox with xbmc
<emOne>
back in those days xbmc was something from the future
<emOne>
by a decade in the future
<emOne>
I am just a bit saddened that right now kodi is starting to feel like enigma 2
<emOne>
that is why I feel like a more advanced "app engine" is the thing that is needed
<emOne>
but I will take a look at plex add on
<emOne>
chewitt: have you ever played neo geo games?
<emOne>
those games look frikking amazing even today
<emOne>
all the neo geo could basically do was display sprites
<emOne>
(a bit more than that ofc)
<chewitt>
no, I was never a gamer
<emOne>
fair enough
<chewitt>
unless you count 'Elite' on a BBC Model B
<chewitt>
(showing age)
<emOne>
heh I never heard of it
<emOne>
but I did hear that the BBC was a great little machine
<chewitt>
if you ever wonder why it's a Raspberry Pi 4 "Model B" .. those folks are a similar age
<emOne>
ahh ok that makes sense
lacrimosa has joined #libreelec
<chewitt>
(and ARM is a derivative of Acorn who built the BBC)
<emOne>
was the BBC also arm based?
<chewitt>
no, long before
<emOne>
my physics teacher had an acorn machine on his desk (still)
<chewitt>
"Some of Acorn's former subsidiaries lived on: ARM Holdings technology is dominant in the mobile phone and personal digital assistant (PDA) microprocessor market"

Too expensive for me. had to make do with a zx spectrum that some kind person gave me all my dad had to do was buy a power pack for it.. glad I had the chance to use model b and an archimedes in school though they were nice machines and have fond memories of them wheeling the computer around to our class :D i remember later, all the IS classes were on PC and the lab full of archimedes machines were almost unused
