<AstralixNB> naobsd: the u-boot on rk3188 does not crash-loop anymore.
<AstralixNB> The reason for the crash-loop was probably an unclean NAND. After forcing the system to stay in Loader mode and low-format the NAND, the uboot does not crash anymore.
<AstralixNB> Probably there is a verification or plausablity check missing that avoids booting trash. Unfortunately this leads to a crash-loop that a normal user cannot get out of.
<AstralixNB> You need to short pins of the NAND at e certain time to get the Loader to stay in Loader mode.
<AstralixNB> Alternatively you short NAND data lines to force MASK-ROM mode, flash RK Loader, low-format, upgrade to u-boot again...
<AstralixNB> But we already agreed that wressling arounf with u-boot is no newbie-stuff
<AstralixNB> *around

<AstralixNB> naobsd, I don't know what was in NAND before... Probably the firefly Android prebuild image.
<AstralixNB> However, breaking the crash-loop then upgrade_tool lf solved the crash-loop
<AstralixNB> Ah, sorry, not an RK3288 firefly image, but a build for RK3188
<AstralixNB> That the u-boot is now silently hanging after starting kernel from recovery.img is something I just have overlooked
<AstralixNB> The system build a boot.img without kernel and a separate kernel.img, but it is building a recovery that includes a kernel.
<AstralixNB> I simply missed that and the u-boot is now trying to start a rk3288 kernel from recovery.img on a rk3188 rock.

<naobsd> mmind00: ping
<naobsd> mmind00: in general, drive strength can be changed freely? is it safe?
<naobsd> mmind00: I'm still not sure but it seems sdmmc drive strength need to be changed for RR 2014 boards
dlezcano has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
dlezcano has joined #linux-rockchip
<mmind00> naobsd: not sure and at least on rk3188 we don't support drive strength settings at all anyway
dlezcano has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
dlezcano has joined #linux-rockchip
<naobsd> mmind00: there are GRF_IO_CONs
<mmind00> naobsd: yes, but on the old socs the setting is always for pin groups, which we don't support currently
<naobsd> and I noticed there are suggested strength values
<naobsd> mmind00: ah, I see
<mmind00> naobsd: rk3288 changed this to per-pin settings
<naobsd> I noticed SD is unstable on RR 2014
<naobsd> there are some reports on Radxa's forum
<naobsd> and I can see (probably) same issue on u-boot and NetBSD
<mmind00> naobsd: if there are "suggested" values for all cases, another approach would be to expect the bootloader to set them already
<naobsd> now I'm trying more than suggested, problem seems to be gone
<naobsd> I'm using u-boot, it doesn't set strength :(
<naobsd> it should be fixed in u-boot
<naobsd> suggested strength is 4ma, there are 2 set of reg bits, one is 2ma, another is 4ma
<naobsd> so I should try 4ma for both at 1st...
<naobsd> mmm, "both 4ma" doesn't solve problem
<naobsd> "both 12ma" is fine
<naobsd> maybe "both 8ma" is fine too
<AstralixNB> naobsd, as far as I can see, none of the rock boards have a correct termination. So regardless which value you set for drivestrength, one will work fine with one speed on one card, another strength will work fine with another card on a different speed.
<AstralixNB> It is not reliable in any way except you limit at about 12MHz
<AstralixNB> But may be I have overlooked something, but searching for "SDMMC_D" on all rock schematics I have only shows connections from SOC to socet and ESD protection.
<AstralixNB> I cannot see any resistors.
<AstralixNB> I already talked to Tom about that issue month's ago and we verified that to be correct in the new rock2
<AstralixNB> You can ask mmind00 for reference that I did a lot of testing around SD/MMC last year
