having said that after the kernel boots I've got to rebuild the entire system, it's quite the mess.... so it might take a while before I've got a real idea of what's working and what is not....

Using the arch install is a good start for figuring out testing kernels, small image and easy install.

My problem is the kernel boots but screen goes dark with no backlight. No text is visible if I shine a light

what's the contents of config.txt?

replace config.txt with whatever file that contains your boot parameters. In the ccase of --bootloader, it doesn't need to contain anything but must be satisfied as an argument
