hio chomwitt

hio = hi ?
<chomwitt>
my n900 has been proved very very tough ship. It has fallen donw many times and still not a screen scratch and work ok
<chomwitt>
i hope neo900 has the same sturdyniess
<Joerg-Neo900>
better, at least that's the design goal

<ravelo>
hm, my daughter pressed on the keys very hard, since then "SIM not found" error
<Joerg-Neo900>
that's exactly what we try to fix for Neo900. By not placing huge BGA chips on backside of kbd, and by additionally supporting the PCB under kbd via a few mechanical posts
<Joerg-Neo900>
obviously we hardly can improve on the mech properties of display and case
<Joerg-Neo900>
but as chomwitt said, the display is very sturdy and protected by the slightly higher rim
<Joerg-Neo900>
heck, once I dropped my N900 and while trying to stop the fall with my foot, I instead stepped on it. Outside on the stone pavement. The device suffered quite some scratching on one corner of the display metal frame (the 0.5mm wide and 4mm high metal thing around the digitizer), but that's all. Not bad for stepping on it and sliding it across the pavement

Joerg-Neo900: the rim thing on the N900 is great

I don't understand why phones these days have such fundamentally retarded designs
<atk>
they make all the glass go all the way to the edges, and make it so if you put the phone face down on something flat, only glass is touching
<atk>
basically if you drop it on anything resembling a hard surface (so anything harder than a carpet basically) there's an incredibly high chance of something breaking
<atk>
You have to buy a tempered glass screen protector and a decent case so that the stupidly designed screens don't get instantly damaged
<Joerg-Neo900>
yep
<atk>
And what's even more funny is when I point this out to owners of such phones.
<atk>
Yet they insist that despite this fatal and obvious flaw, the phones are still incredibly sturdy.
<atk>
And despite the multitude of large cracks on the screen they insist that the phone had fallen multiple times and on some occasions, in ways which were very likely to damage it, and yet had not been damaged.
<atk>
I guess it is then a good idea to show them my phone which had fallen many more times than their phone and survived for 9 years and still doesn't have even a dead pixel.
<atk>
I mean, I for one have nothing against tempered glass screens, they're pretty and they're clear, but certainly I do have something against stupidly designed tempered glass screens.
<Joerg-Neo900>
I guess they will answer then that they *like* their phones braking after 2 years the latest, or they wouldn't know how to justify getting a new one
<atk>
2 years?
<atk>
you think the screens last 2 years?
<atk>
often they don't last 2 weeks
<atk>
that's the impression I get from two of my coworkers who both managed to crack their screens 2 weeks after they got a new phone
<Kero>
because people are supposed to buy new phones, over and over again.
