i just put in my preorder -- did i make it in time for the first batch?
<DocScrutinizer05>
sure thing :-) Thanks
<gnutun>
great!

<EndZ>
will there be 5 ghz WLAN on the neo900?
<EndZ>
in the block diagram there are question marks.
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, unless skies fall down
<DocScrutinizer05>
umm, the ??? are just for the tap
<DocScrutinizer05>
unclear yet if we place that before or after the 0R "switch"
<EndZ>
ah okay.
<DocScrutinizer05>
also all that is for prototype, final device will have only one of the alternatives
<DocScrutinizer05>
for evaluation purposes we want to support all the different options in prototype
<DocScrutinizer05>
to see if N900 WLAN antenna works with 5GHz or not, and how the chip antenna performs
<DocScrutinizer05>
right now there are rather some "?" around the type of WLAN module, the wg7351 has 20 weeks lead time and MOQ:2000, and even that might be a "go away" message rather than an offer
<DocScrutinizer05>
EndZ: you're aware of the hover boxes and the links to datasheets in Block Diagram?
<EndZ>
yeah
<DocScrutinizer05>
so see datasheet of the wg7351 for its capabilities - with the above "but..."
<EndZ>
quite good i have no exams anymore, when i'll get my neo900. I will lock me in my room and play with it the next days :D

w.r.t. the spacer frame, there's a picture* that shows the keyboard recessed (perhaps more difficult to type on) ... is that the final design? *:https://neo900.org/stuff/werner/spacer/1/spacer-06-open.jpg

<DocScrutinizer05>
gnutun: not final design
<DocScrutinizer05>
final design will be exactly like on N900 (plus the 3 status LEDs left of kbd)
<DocScrutinizer05>
(plus the RGB backlight)
<Wizzup>
:D
<gnutun>
great, thanks!
<wpwrak>
yup, the keyboard position should be nominally the same as in the original. i say nominally because in the end, we'll have to see if it needs any tweaking and such to feel "right".
<wpwrak>
so for now it's just an open-loop process that tries to mimick the original as good as measurement and machining tolerances allow.
<wpwrak>
also, the edge is very sharp. that will have to be smoothed, either by casting/machining or at least by sanding. smoothing the edge will also lower the height where it meets the keyboard.
<wpwrak>
the lack of smoothing comes from my mill not being able to work on the piece from both sides. and i didn't want to do too much manual work on those precious few first prototypes.
<wpwrak>
and another thing that affects the keyboard in my pics is that it's not supported by anything. it just hangs in there, held by friction. later on, we'll have the pcb below it that will push it up.

DocScrutinizer05: in what circumstances is new/approval/fun to be had with matching wlan modules with antennae / effectively new complete hardware designs ?
<enyc>
err new fcc-approval or whatever, i mean
<enyc>
not sure but may be grey-area when approval of complet device is required
<enyc>
i recall raspberry-pi people getting told at some point they needed approval or whole device even though it was a board only or somesuch...

<DocScrutinizer05>
sure, we also need approval of complete board, but we use pre-approved modules for all RF stuff so that goes like "check if it still behaves in the circuit" and that's it
<DocScrutinizer05>
basically iirc we need CE that includes EMI (radiation of RF that isn't expected to be seen), SAR (amplitude of the RF expected to be seen, make sure it's still on a safe level even with this antenna [gain]), and probably a schematics review or sth
<DocScrutinizer05>
the modem and WLAN itself is tested and certified to have standards conforming RF signals and we didn't change anything on them
<DocScrutinizer05>
actually we can't change anything on them

* enyc
can't remember if next proto-board is potentially-final or if there may well be another, or what =)
<R0b0t1>
enyc: Any antenna sold with the device would be subject to testing, but there could be places to attach your own antenna left in.
<R0b0t1>
Or an antenna which has been certified picked, so it would have a high chance of passing.
<enyc>
i see
<enyc>
i recall the fun with laptop mfrs ending up modding bioses to refuse to boot with 'un-approved' pci-e cards etc
* R0b0t1
mumblegrumbles
<R0b0t1>
yeah that was kind of evil
<enyc>
hp laptop seems quite ok if you use the _other_ pci-e slot =)
<enyc>
just not the one to which the original intel card came in...!
