kentonv: maybe if I help you folks out, I wonder if we could hire your developer to give us advice ...
<warren>

<kentonv>
the funny thing about our web site is it seems to work really well for some people and really poorly for others. Some people complain loudly that they can't figure out from our site what Sandstorm does. :/
<kentonv>
the basic structure and content of the site was a collaborative effort between several of us. The art and pixel placement is from our designer (Nena).
<warren>
kentonv: I think the way you balanced corporate and developer cred is exactly what we need on our site.
<paulproteus>
I think kentonv now the site will work for way more people!
<paulproteus>
But we'll see.
<paulproteus>
Conclusion of conversation here:
<paulproteus>
The Packaging-tutorial will remain the way it is, but there'll be Topic Guides that discuss specific packaging-related topics.

As usual, Meteor is great.
<paulproteus>
Also turns out my "Did you need to run `make update-deps` saved me some stress."
<paulproteus>
Erm, the " is in the wrong place there.
<paulproteus>
XgF: The thing Slack gives you is that people who aren't "tech people" suddenly feel comfortable chatting in groups.
<paulproteus>
This is basically unheard of with IRC or other internal chat things I've seen.
<paulproteus>
And that those same people feel empowered to search group chat archives.
<paulproteus>
That's it, but that's pretty cool. Curiously the more techy one is, the harder it is to see that, since we already feel comfortable text chatting in groups with archives.

<YuviPanda>
MW is kind of a shitty 'personal' wiki though
<YuviPanda>
InstantCommons should probably be true
<YuviPanda>
but that requires that you allow http (now https!) access to commons
<paulproteus>
Yeah, that's somewhat true. MW on Sandstorm is interesting mostly (IMHO) as a group wiki with Sandstorm-based access control.
<YuviPanda>
yeah
<YuviPanda>
also the secret key is just in the public file
<YuviPanda>
and I guess that doens't get regenerated or anything
<paulproteus>
I like to semi-joke that the CIA's MediaWiki should be moved to run on Sandstorm.
<YuviPanda>
:D
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: or NASA's! :D
<paulproteus>
Oh, that's interesting.
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: but yeah, the user account thing is the most interesting bit
<YuviPanda>
I also think something like ZNC would be great in there as well
<paulproteus>
I agree, though it requires an IRC "driver" so that the app can have very fine-grained network access, and we don't have that yet (but it's in the pipeline somewhere).
<paulproteus>
I should write that up somewhere because it's like FAQ #1. : P
<YuviPanda>
yep :P
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: a prominent link to 'how to hack an application to work with the user auth model' would also be great
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: as would be a 'ports wanted'
<paulproteus>
Ports Wanted, yeah!
<YuviPanda>
err
<YuviPanda>
Packages wanted
<paulproteus>
https://sandstorm.io/vote is our official list of what packages people in the App Committee have voted on.
<paulproteus>
We're supposed to spend "our" time on those, but if others want to beat us to the punch on them, I imagine no one would mind.
<paulproteus>
And yeah, I (or someone) needs to write a "Topic guide: Integrating with Sandstorm authentication" for the docs.
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: also maybe a wikipedia login provider :D
<YuviPanda>
that'll be cool as well
<paulproteus>
InstantCommons is interesting.
<paulproteus>
Wikipedia login provider is fascinating.
<YuviPanda>
and probably quite simple....
<YuviPanda>
aaargh, no I'll have to port the Mediawiki OAuth client from python to node first
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: is the general attitude 'discuss before starting to work on patch' or 'just do it, we will merge if it is good enough'
<paulproteus>
It's usually smart to "Discuss before..." but really we exhibit both behaviors. It depends on how complex the patch is and how similar your judgment and the rest of the team's judgment is.
<paulproteus>
BTW will I see you at Open Source Bridge?
<YuviPanda>
Don't know!
<YuviPanda>
So I guess no? I forgot about it
<paulproteus>
Aw, oh well.
<YuviPanda>
Am at barncamp.org.UK atm
<paulproteus>
That's a cute name for a conference.
<YuviPanda>
Yup
<YuviPanda>
It actually is in a barn
<paulproteus>
I figured.
<paulproteus>
(Am exploring its wesite.)
<YuviPanda>
:)
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: a new login provider feels a bit... Large. I'll await discussion :) should I just wait for people to comment on issues or email the list?
<paulproteus>
Emailing the list is a good idea. That brings it up to a broader audience.
<YuviPanda>
Yeah will do that later today
<paulproteus>
BTW how did you hear about Sandstorm?
<paulproteus>
Also in other news, I really need someone's help moving our existing docs from our GitHub wiki into our new mkdocs-based workflow.
<paulproteus>
I guess I can send an email to sandstorm-dev about that.
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: HN many months ago
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: and now I'm in a barn full of activity techy people so triggered looking at it again :)
<paulproteus>
: D
<paulproteus>
They should all be doing their activisty doc collaboration on self-hosted Sandstorms!
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: yup :)
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: might demo it if there is interest tomorrow
<paulproteus>
I believe ocdtrekkie ported the slides to Hacker Slides but I don't know if he's published a grain where people can use that.
<paulproteus>
(note to self, and I should probably mention to Jack of Hacker Slides: Hacker Slides doesn't yet have a way to publish a read-only view of the talk, alas.)
<YuviPanda>
A publicly published static html thing?
<paulproteus>

I hope you'll stick around on the channel here!
<YuviPanda>
paulproteus: yeah, have it on autojoin now
<phildini>
yep. free ice cream! and beer! in a park!
<phildini>
if you moved your event to tuesday, I would both attend and heavily promote. :)
<phildini>
and probably help people get sandstorm installed.
<paulproteus>
Egad.
<paulproteus>
Tuesday just seems so _early_!
<paulproteus>
But... I guess that's fine.
<phildini>
the early bird gets the sandstorm install.
<paulproteus>
I guess it can't be Thu since that's the party.
<paulproteus>
OK.
<paulproteus>
p.s. thanks for seeing this!!!!!!!

I'm pretty excited, especially since I believe that someone out there has a really killer sandstorm app waiting to happen, and OSB has a high chance of catching that black swan.

<phildini>
also:
<phildini>
hmm..
<phildini>
sorry, network traffic weirdness.
<phildini>
I was going to say: if you make your ticket a "free" ticket rather than an RSVP, you'll get the cool new event page. :)
<paulproteus>
np, just joking
<paulproteus>
Whoa interesting re: new event page
<paulproteus>
this is like cheat codes for eventbrite
<phildini>
yeah. org growth was lent to listings for a couple sprints to finish it up; it looks really slick.
<paulproteus>
BTW I picked "RSVP" literally because it was a suggestion in the UI.
<phildini>
fair.
<paulproteus>
It's the HTML5 PLACEHOLDER or equivalent in the ticket name field.
<paulproteus>
So please submit an Eventbrite patch to make the suggestion be "free". (-:
<phildini>
oh huh. wait, so you clicked the "free"button?
kxra has joined #sandstorm
<paulproteus>
Ya
<phildini>
if so, I might be wrong and I'm not sure why you didn't get the new version already...
<phildini>
oh! lol. I know why: html in the event description. we're trying to kill that.
<paulproteus>
Oh, okay. Is there a way to make my event have bold text without "using HTML in the event description"?
<paulproteus>
And/or do you have content suggestions so I could stop having bold text? (Honest question.)
<phildini>
yeah, that's a real great set of questions. let me ponder.
