<frigginglorious> hey kentonv , i wanted to quote you on something you talked about with data privacy. It was about an app that sorts physical mail Was it a video or an article?
<kentonv> frigginglorious: that would be Brad Fitzpatrick's Scanning Cabinet, which I use as an example often. Probably the most prominent place I've mentioned it is https://sandstorm.io/news/2014-07-21-open-source-web-apps-require-federated-hosting
<frigginglorious> kentonv: awesome, TY. I’m going to bring it up after a joke about wearing tinfoil hats to keep google and the NSA out of your business.
<frigginglorious> and I’m going to recommend people watch this. because it was an awesome video: The (Fictional) Day Google Forgot To Check Passwords https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4GB_NDU43Q
<kentonv> frigginglorious: Funny thing is, that actually happened to Dropbox in 2011. http://venturebeat.com/2011/06/21/dropbox-files-left-unprotected-for-four-hours-due-to-software-bug/
<kentonv> (can't remember if the video mentions that)
<frigginglorious> kentonv: beautiful. I’m using that.

<pdurbin> that Dropbox exploit reminds me of http://wiki.greptilian.com/podcasts/clips/anyone-could-read-this/
<frigginglorious> pdurbin: i feel the same way. Unless you take to tor, always assume it’s public.

<simonv3> Just put up a pre-release for annotate 1.3.0 https://github.com/simonv3/annotate/releases/tag/v1.3.0
<simonv3> (spk on page)
<simonv3> Basically it allows for image histories, and some interface changes
twodimes-shout has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<kentonv> yay annotate updates
<kentonv> simonv3: there's still a bug where when I upload a bunch of images at the start, they all are numbered 1 and renaming them causes unexpected reordering. It goes away once I reorder the images at the top.
<kentonv> Hmm, I'm not sure I like the new "add an annotation?" prompt -- it was easy enough to delete accidental annotations before, IMO.

<simonv3> kentonv: I'll look into the reordering. They wouldn't have an order defined, the order only gets added when you reorder at the top. But it probably makes sense to assume a default order in the order added.

<DanC__> gone-in-six... "OneDrive URLs have predictable structure" gak! that's the sort of thing that makes me think product liability for software (or at least: services) should become a thing.
<ocdtrekkie> DanC__: There'd be no services companies left.
<ocdtrekkie> A lot of Silicon Valley companies would not be able to turn a profit if they were either required to take responsibility for their actions, or, like, comply with the law.
<DanC__> compliance is always a risk/reward thing
<ocdtrekkie> I wonder how fast the US gov is gonna get rid of BlackBerries, now that they know a foreign government can access any of them.
<DanC__> one of the main thing about liability is that if the customer doesn't pay anything, there's no contract, so very limited liability
<DanC__> I doubt the US govt trusted that their blackberries were confidential very heavily
<ocdtrekkie> I kinda wonder, because last I had seen they still made the President carry one. Though they might have a special build with different keys or something?
<ocdtrekkie> DanC__: Honestly, there's a lot of tech companies that provide crud liability even with paid products.
<DanC__> sure; they're making a bet
<ocdtrekkie> I feel like the only way Comcast will ever straighten out their customer service, is if I get a month of service free every time an agent lies to me.
<ocdtrekkie> Cuz my service would be free.
<DanC__> I'm not having trouble with my provider lately. knock wood.
<ocdtrekkie> Sometimes free service for missed time isn't enough. Lost profits and stuff.
<ocdtrekkie> When my web host would go out, I had three nine guarantees, so they'd credit the month. And then a week later, I'm still having issues, but they won't do anything for me, because they already gave me the month free.
<ocdtrekkie> Dunno if you saw the comments about the email change on App Engine on HN?
<ocdtrekkie> This comment is a good example: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11501768
<ocdtrekkie> Iunno what business he's in, but 35 quotes could be a massive amount of loss.

<zarvox> Lord: I'm not aware of anyone who runs Sandstorm on Alpine, but since Sandstorm self-containerizes, I would expect it to work fine, so long as your kernel has the appropriate features enabled. :)
<Lord> i'm tryng to install it but the script doesn't work flawlessy
<Lord> it complains about no useradd command
<zarvox> Ahhh, because we try to add a user for the sandstorm server to run as.
<zarvox> You could manually create the user account, and then the installer script should notice that the user already exists and not bother attempting to make one itself.
<zarvox> How do you typically add users under Alpine, if not with useradd?
<zarvox> looks like the package that provides it is "shadow", from a cursory googling
