<jinzo>
yeah, but at least A20 truly is priced very near A10
<jinzo>
RK doesen't leave good taste in the mouth with linux support (and performance was not that stellar in previous chips too)
<hramrach>
it's drop-in replacement potentially improving mp performance at the cost of up performance
<jinzo>
but it looks like RK3188 is the go-to SoC for cheap stuff on quad cores - and supposedly better than the ATM shit
<hramrach>
the arch is updated since a10 so some things are better but there is potential for new bugs
<hramrach>
why would you want quad?
<hramrach>
if it has more memory bandwidth than A20/A31 then sure
<hramrach>
if not the cores will idle
<hramrach>
most likely
<jinzo>
I don't specificly want quad, but just interested in performance aspects
<hramrach>
I am interested in perf aspects of rk too
<jinzo>
and which SoC to suggest to friends/relatives to look into
<hramrach>
but the linux support is not even at the point you could measure the performance
<jinzo>
yeah I know
<hramrach>
the kernel does not support cpufreq scaling yeat and the SoC does not default to max from the bootloader (which is closed)
<jinzo>
I would go with Exynos/i.mx6 if I would look performance + linux
* hramrach
likes exynos performance
<jinzo>
the new Octa's look sexy, and ODROID even has a board out now.
<jinzo>
which is nice.
<jinzo>
s/ODROID/hardkernel/
<jinzo>
I think we're closing on the "this is usable as a limited workstation" milestone with those SoCs
* hramrach
typing on a chromebook
<hramrach>
yes, the exynos really looks usable
<hramrach>
with small screen at least
<hramrach>
still problems with video playback and 3d, though
<jinzo>
:/
<hramrach>
3d is probably doable but video :/
<jinzo>
the new chromebook pixel is x86?
* jinzo
googles
<hramrach>
pixel is x86 I think
<jinzo>
because that has a big ass screen resolution :D
<jinzo>
yeah, i5 even :/
<hramrach>
but there is this arm netbook from samsung shipped with chromeos preinstalled
<jinzo>
and acer too afaik?
Dessimat0r has quit [Quit: Computer has gone to sleep.]
<hramrach>
yes. probably
<jinzo>
anyway I have to run, it was a pleasure.
<hramrach>
won't touch anything from Acer unless I can see it in advance and it has *lots* of *very* positive reviews
<Gumboot>
I see a fan!
<Gumboot>
CA15 _can_ be run fanless at full speed, right?
<Gumboot>
Also wondering how Dual and Octa compare for OpenCL-style tasks.
<WarheadsSE>
jinzo: samsung is the ARM
<WarheadsSE>
series 3
<WarheadsSE>
Gumboot: yup, it has a fan, between the CPU & power monitoring chip
<Gumboot>
Kind of spoils the point of it all, for me.
<WarheadsSE>
hramrach: video playback should be mostly portable as lima comes along, and we get some access to the decoders
<Gumboot>
Well, half of it. The other half is that x86 is a horrible ISA.
<WarheadsSE>
well, the S4(intl) is thermal throttled a bit, and has the beauty of being rested right afainst the frame for heat dissipation
<WarheadsSE>
pepperflash does work fairly well hramrach but I wouldn't attempt a 720p playback..

WarheadsSE: lima does not do video, it does 3d
<hramrach>
and 720p is lame. today common content is 1080p. if you can't play that you don't have a video player .

<WarheadsSE>
hramrach: I wouldn't want to use this non-1080p screen for viewing, tbh
<hramrach>
WarheadsSE: so would you want to recode?
<hramrach>
it's not about getting the supreme quality. it's about getting any playback at all
<hramrach>
plus you ahve a HDMI connector :p

hramrach: I have tv's for movies
<WarheadsSE>
for which I have chromecast && WDTV Live attached
<hramrach>
I don't. And you can't pack a TV into a laptop bag
<WarheadsSE>
Yeah, but I can pack my tablet
<hramrach>
which has totally 1080p screen
acassis has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<WarheadsSE>
close
<WarheadsSE>
or as close as you're going to really get.
<hramrach>
there are 1080p tablest these days
<WarheadsSE>
I can't remember.. is the new nexus7 1080? .. i just said shuttup and take my money..
<hramrach>
but the point is not that you can packa a tablet. The point is that if you pack a device you either can play 1080p on it (even if the screen has lower res) or it's useless for media playback/review/..
<WarheadsSE>
Yeah, I don't use my hromebook for media
