<lkcl> jfred[m]: it's a design issue. basically IPFS is only capable of storing static files: it's too dangerous to allow it to do arbitrary code execution
<lkcl> jfred[m]: so the only thing that you can store is: HTML, CSS, images and javascript
<lkcl> if you can provide your *own* cgi-bin / code-execution-engine / database then *great*... otherwise....
<lkcl> but of course, now you're critically dependent on a single-point-of-failure duh...
<lkcl> where something like ipfs takes off is when it's permitted to perform arbitrary but restricted code execution... but then you need to *verify* the results by having several independent engines execute the exact same code and then corroborate the results. it gets horribly complex from that point onwards
<jfred[m]> lkcl: that's where ethereum comes in I think
<jfred[m]> though there's a lot you can do with just static files since single-page javascript apps are common now
<xcasex> gittorrent & ipfs still suffers from the p2p fallacy, sure its great, but will still need storage, and since not everyone but idealists and corporations would be interested in the infrastructure portion, we're back to a few central nodes.
<jelly> bandwidth is still not free, either
<jfred[m]> I dunno, torrents seem to work pretty well. I think if you can find a good UI for IPFS (maybe a "share" button that seeds for a few hours too) it could work
<xcasex> oDet följer dessutom med lite bonuskommentarer till den texten vilka inte är med i Det Grymma Svärdets publikation.
<jfred[m]> though the increase in mobile adoption vs. laptops/desktops is a problem there
<xcasex> doh
<jfred[m]> (since you don't want to be seeding anything on a mobile connection)
<xcasex> jfred[m]: yeah but then you need to have control of concurrency of operations
<xcasex> so uh, for now, i'll pass.

<lkcl> xcasex: the use-case for gittorrent and ipfs are completely different
<lkcl> xcasex: gittorrent is for creating robust software libre development environments
<lkcl> xcasex: ipfs is for general-purpose robust web serving
