<grog> for the a10 cubieboard, wasnt there some power mod/jumper/something to feed enough power for SATA drives?
<grog> i'm powering the board with a nice 5v 2.5a supply but the drive still doesn't get enough sauce
gallivat has joined #cubieboard
<TheLinuxBug> No
<TheLinuxBug> you have to buy a secondary board
<TheLinuxBug> that provides the 12v
<TheLinuxBug> SATA power is 12v+5v
<TheLinuxBug> for 3.5"
<TheLinuxBug> and yes there is a wire you have to short
<grog> it's a 2.5"
<TheLinuxBug> when you add the 12v board
<TheLinuxBug> ohh, well if you have a good 2Amp 5v adapter and a GOOD CABLE <-- this makes all the difference in the world
<TheLinuxBug> then it should run 2.5"
<TheLinuxBug> cause it only needs 5v1A
<TheLinuxBug> but
<grog> im trying to use the cubie provided cable
<grog> the combined sata/power plug one
<TheLinuxBug> the one with the barrel end?
<grog> nah, i have my own psu/barrel
<TheLinuxBug> no I mean there is 2 connectors on the A10
<TheLinuxBug> you can use Mini USB
nighty^ has quit [Quit: Disappears in a puff of smoke]
<TheLinuxBug> or you can use the barel connector
<grog> yes the barrek
<grog> yes the barrel
<TheLinuxBug> hmm then maybe your power supply isn't putting out what is advertised
<TheLinuxBug> a lot of cheap ones don't
<TheLinuxBug> I am just telling you I had to figit with several power adapters and several USB cables (as I used the mini USB)
<TheLinuxBug> to get it working right
<TheLinuxBug> but assuming your using the USB -> Barrel connector provided with it, sounds like your power supply isn't putting out what it should
<TheLinuxBug> if you get an issue where the drive tries to spin up
<TheLinuxBug> and then down
<TheLinuxBug> over and over
<TheLinuxBug> its not getting enough power
<TheLinuxBug> you should be able to hear it if it is a mechanical drive
<TheLinuxBug> if its SSD not sure how you would know
<grog> it's a beefy psu. there's no usb involved, just a straight barrel

<TheLinuxBug> I finally bought a good adapter off amazon
<TheLinuxBug> let me find it
<grog> [ 295.951590] ata1: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 310)
<grog> [ 295.953582] ata1: EH complete
<grog> [ 296.272231] ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4040000 action 0xe frozen
<grog> [ 296.285520] ata1: irq_stat 0x00000040, connection status changed
<grog> [ 296.288927] ata1: SError: { CommWake DevExch }
<grog> [ 296.297567] ata1: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps
<grog> [ 296.300562] ata1: hard resetting link
<grog> over and over
<TheLinuxBug> ohh then yeah your power supply isn't working right then
<TheLinuxBug> now enough power
<TheLinuxBug> if its hard resetting
<TheLinuxBug> thats what I ended up getting
<TheLinuxBug> those actually put out what is advertised
<TheLinuxBug> and thats a pretty good deal on them also
<TheLinuxBug> 8.88 and if you have amazon prime free 2 day shipping :p
<grog> yeah im not buying any more PSUs for this piece of shit
<TheLinuxBug> ??
<TheLinuxBug> I have really enjoyed my cubieboard A10
<TheLinuxBug> in fact I like it more than my BananaPi
<TheLinuxBug> can't get crap to wrok right on my BPi for my life
<TheLinuxBug> A10 just works
<TheLinuxBug> have had 3 of them
<TheLinuxBug> even made my own SATA cable for one and my own cases
<TheLinuxBug> They just are very sensitive to the power supply when wanting to run a drive with it
<TheLinuxBug> went through 3 different power supplies till I found one that actually put out what it advertised
<TheLinuxBug> thats one I pasted above does the trick
<grog> ive tried a handful, including some cisco one and a viewsonic 6A
<TheLinuxBug> try using a USB converter with the USB cable that comes supplied
<TheLinuxBug> or a Mini USB
<TheLinuxBug> the power cable may not be insulated enough on those cheap power supplies your trying
<TheLinuxBug> thats what I meant about needing to have a good USB cable
<TheLinuxBug> it makes all the difference
<grog> there is no usb cable involved
<grog> insulated enough from what
<TheLinuxBug> the cable its self is not insulated enough to carry 5v2a over the cable reliably
<TheLinuxBug> even though its rated for it
<TheLinuxBug> it can't provide it
<grog> then it would be warm. woo.
<grog> anyway bbq time
<TheLinuxBug> iI bought these to use with my power supply for the A10
<TheLinuxBug> they work quite well also
<TheLinuxBug> A lot of the adapters which do switching also don't handle switching up well always to the max, that may also be an issue you are seeing
