good morning t0m_

i'm planning to use my cubietruck to build a chartplotter and plan to run lubuntu desktop ... what are the advantages/disadvantages of running it on nand/sdcard/external hdd?

<nils_2>
i am using a 256GB ssd and i boot from it. at this moment i am upgrading from trusty to utopic. its way easier to do an upgrade and the nand has only 8(?) gb of memory
<t0m_>
ah got ya ... but performance should be the same?
<nils_2>
performance is very good with the ssd. but i am running the cubietruck 24/7, so i don't boot from it very often
<t0m_>
thanks nils_2

<GeneralStupid>
what kind of experts are working for them?

nils_2: I believe there is a limitation to the NAND like 16M write/18M read or something (woukld have to read again the exact) but point being, if you hook up SSD to SATA or even SATA to USB adapter you will get at least 30M/sec read/write (USB) up to 45M write/100M/read (A20 real SATA). So, performance on hooked up drive will 90% time be more performant than NAND, however NAND is generally better than most SDcard in reliability
crisco_ is now known as crisco
<TheLinuxBug>
and depending on the class of the SDcard can be much faster
<TheLinuxBug>
nils_2: just trying to give you some real numbers ;)
<nils_2>
i never told anything about speed, did i? :-)
<buZz>
fyi both SD and SSD also use NAND ;)
