pjustice, philpem: what would it take to interface with ESDI or SMD?
<pjustice>
ESDI is not much different from MFM/RLL, I don't think. SMD has a significantly different "command language".
<pjustice>
I'm wrong, ESDI has serial commands
<pjustice>
also, up to 24 Mbit/s transfer
<pjustice>
separator on drive

Interesting. The very original Shugart floppy also had separator on drive, but they removed it from the interface by the time Double Density rolled around
<pjustice>
For MFM, of course, the separator is on the controller.
<pjustice>
SMD also sep on drive, up to 24 MHz signalling in its later forms
<philpem>
ESDI and SMD... I'd need drives and controllers to test with, but in theory it'd just be a microcode and firmware change
<pjustice>
Less analyzing on the flux line, since the drive just hands you bits; more work moving serial data.
