<topi`>
aholler: what's wrong with vivante? :) there isn't exactly a huge selection of gpu cores that have good OSS support
<topi`>
the gc7000 should be much faster than the old gc2000
cnxsoft has quit [Quit: cnxsoft]
Nilesh_ has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<aholler>
topi`: closed source which ends up with complicated handling
<aholler>
trying to use the proprietary drivers does cost a lot of time. Too much for home projects.
<aholler>
it doesn't help much if the gpu is fast, if I have to spend a lot of time to use it. E.g. also I wanted to use graphics of the wandboard too, it just ended up as 24/7 nas/proxy/mail/whatever headless server.
<aholler>
e.g. if I remember correctly there have been at least 3 different gl drivers, one for fb, one for x11 and one for <can't remember>.
<aholler>
might be ok for commercial projects, but for DIY, I don't want to spend that much time..
<aholler>
as I just see a msg: /sbin/ldconfig: libraries libGLESv2-x11.so and libGLESv2.so.2.0.0 in directory /usr/lib have same soname but different type.
<aholler>
ok, it's an installation from around 3 years ago where I did not touch the x11-stuff anymore, but it just was not straight forward to use the capabilities of the hw. And now it's going to rest in peace ;)
<aholler>
of course, imx isn't the only ARM hw which failed with graphics for DIY.
<vpeter>
If community devs would work together then you could get more from it. Instead the situation is as is.
<aholler>
that concept doesn't work anymore.
<aholler>
(imho)
<vpeter>
You know the reason why not?
<vpeter>
Because in my opinion lot of wasted time happen.
<aholler>
it failed because community devs need a live (and money) too
<aholler>
uups s/live/life/
<vpeter>
Those few companies could pay to few devs. But instead we get new shiny hw with **** sw support.
<lrusak>
imx6 OSS stack is in good shape IMO
<TwisteR>
is it possible to build fully libre-distro, without single blob? e.g. for wandboard
<TwisteR>
with graphics (fbdev), to plot some diagrams in realtime (so, at least 2D hw. acc would be great)
<lrusak>
I'm using mesa (etnaviv) in libreELEC with the imx-drm driver with great success
<TwisteR>
that is awesome
<lrusak>
you only need specific firmware IIRC if you want to use the coda v4l2 driver
<TwisteR>
no, nothing like that. Just output to parallel LCD
<vpeter>
lrusak: I think kodi is a proof that imx6 is not so good. If it would be then all it's code there would stay. But you remove it because no one can manage it.
<lrusak>
it's not needed! the proprietary stuff wasn't ever good.
<lrusak>
we can now have a common code path for many devices
<vpeter>
It was needed till now.
<vpeter>
So you buy device in 2014 and wait 3 years to get something from it :-)
<lrusak>
this could have been done a year ago only FFmpeg was lacking
<lrusak>
but it doesn't matter
<lrusak>
the past is the past
<lrusak>
only the future is important
<TwisteR>
vpeter: that is not an i.mx-platform specific plague, all industry is rotten
<vpeter>
lrusak: tell that to all frustrated users :)
<TwisteR>
but there is a Hope now, at last 8)
<vpeter>
Maybe whole imx branch will be dropped when nxp will be sold :-)
<lrusak>
maybe :)
<TwisteR>
do you know something better in this regard?
<lrusak>
but i.MX8 is looking really good
<vpeter>
and expensive.
<lrusak>
it is only laking a v4l2 driver, which from what I have heard is possible to make from the documenation
<lrusak>
meh
<lrusak>
I'd pay $100 for a board with proper software support
<lrusak>
screw amlogic crap
<TwisteR>
+1024
<vpeter>
Tell me when you get there :)
<TwisteR>
and mediatek, and allwinner
<TwisteR>
I even refuse to touch to that hw
<lrusak>
even allwinner is better IMO
<lrusak>
they have almost mainline support
<vpeter>
After how much time?
<lrusak>
vpeter: I am pretty much there. I can play 1080P videos in kodi on the cubox-i4
<TwisteR>
haven't followed allwinner for past 4 years, do they still violating GPL?
<TwisteR>
I even forgot the project's name... sushi linux? :D
<lrusak>
TwisteR: there is a pretty big community behind allwinner
<lrusak>
lot of stuff has been upstreamed
<TwisteR>
good to hear that
<TwisteR>
linux-sunxi, that is
<TwisteR>
lrusak: but still not by vendor, I presume...
