<warpme_> kwiboo: finally I managed to have single 5.0.9 mainline kernel codebase + kernel config giving me fully working i386/x86_64/aarch64 with all peripherals - except rockchip hw video decode. May You pls advice me for minimal set of patches for mainline 5.0.9 to enable v4l2 m2m video decode on rk3328? (once again - thx for helping me with getting 3328 audio)!
<Kwiboo> warpme_: https://github.com/Kwiboo/linux-rockchip/compare/v5.0.7...rockchip-5.0-v4l2-from-list.patch should apply on v5.0.9 but is 275 patches large (include all v4l2 core, sunxi cedrus and rk vpu changes from latest torvalds + media_tree and rk vpu mpeg2 v3 patchset), tested this on 5.0.9 on rk3288/rk3328/rk3399 yesterday

<Kwiboo> sorry should be https://github.com/Kwiboo/linux-rockchip/compare/v5.0.8...rockchip-5.0-v4l2-from-list.patch, it is large as I pulled in all vicodec/vimc/vim2m changes

<warpme_> argh - I see it has also v4l2 general changes proposed by hans at sunxi work. Ideally will be to have 5.0.9 baseline + just given functionality patches (audio, vdec, etc). I really enjoy approach Neil had for amlogic like i.e. https://github.com/superna9999/linux/commits/linux-5.0-le-amlogic-gx (just for audio) or i.e. Maxime for v4l2 m2m (https://github.com/Elyotna/linux/commits/5.0/v4l2-m2m-pr).
<warpme_> sure - interdependencies is difficult thing…but if we want to include any functionality support in mailine - such decomposition will be first mandatory steep (I think)
<Kwiboo> yep, I created a helper script to backport all commits from torvalds (5.1) + media_tree (5.2) under some paths and skip some commits that caused too much merge conflicts, since I want to be able to send patches to ML I need the latest from -next so this works for my workflow

<warpme_> kwiboo - did You consider to add in Your git some branches devoted as pull request (PR) branches for mainlining. This is Maxime approach I think - and IMHO much more effective than ML with patches. Interested person just can backport commits from such PR branch into his git and voila - it is up&running.
