whats the status of the project
<openbot>
i was away for a while
<openbot>
will read logs later
<openbot>
also i got a terrible problem with internet can anybody help me a little
<openbot>
its a wired connection'
<openbot>
i guess all people here know a good deal
<openbot>
if its too ot i ll ask somewhere else
<openbot>
the problem is the router thing is on the pole and a cat5 goes to my room i can use internet fine but the isp got a login page that is at least bearable
<openbot>
the problem is i got a ip assined so i need to manually configure everything which is terrible when plugging to other computers or alternate os
<openbot>
horrible part is the isp wants to charge for a wifi router every month like renting it dosent matter if i buy a router or they provide one
<openbot>
how do i get around this weird issue
cccnnjj has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<openbot>
can i use a wired router and spit multiple cables from it most importantly will the use of a wired router eliminate the manual configuration needed to connect to the internet i.e plug the lan cable and it gets connected
<openbot>
the reason to ask is i got no experience with routers and i ll need to buy one to test it
<openbot>
or better i can set up a internet gateway on a spare laptop but a laptop consumes much more power than a router
<xman>
openbot: Honestly I don't think your gonna get much help on here, your kinda talking to yourself. You may want to go to a linux irc chat instead. But you should be able to plug in a wireless or wired router in to what ever modem the isp gave you. That new router should give you the ability to create you own local network that the modem has no control over. You could even set up a internal wireless network for test first.
<openbot>
i dont know which one is a sensible option a gateway or a wired router
<openbot>
the isp gave me no mordem
<openbot>
modem
<xman>
what did they give you? How do you get onto the internet?
<openbot>
name me a channel
<openbot>
they gave me a cat5 cable
<openbot>
which comes from the pole
<xman>
from the wall?
<openbot>
you see why i am going mad
louisdk has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<openbot>
the wire comes from a pole which has a box
<xman>
So all you have is a cat5 cable from the wall?
<openbot>
no damm wall direct from a electric pole
louisdk has joined #neo900
<openbot>
the box on the pole runs multiple cables to diffrent homes like mine
<xman>
You should be able to plug a router into that cat5 and make your own local network.
<openbot>
i know that
vakkov has joined #neo900
<xman>
you could get an older router if cost is a issue, but be sure to get one that allows 3rd prty open source firmware.
<openbot>
i want to know but will i need to configure my network on multiple machines or will it be plug and play
<xman>
I see. Hmm, I thought you haven't tried that yet.
<openbot>
na i didnt tried any router yet
<openbot>
just tell me does a router allow to configure dns ip subnet mask and alike
* Arch-TK
has been looking for a router which doubles as a wap
<xman>
openbot: what do you mean by "trying to get around parell ports"
hashcore has joined #neo900
<openbot>
trying to use parell port to control leds next a relay
<openbot>
i.e controling hardware with software as i call it
<openbot>
xman
<openbot>
thanks DocScrutinizer05
<xman>
I see. Yeah that probably won't be needed once you get a router, if that for your networking.
<openbot>
maybe
<openbot>
electronics is cool
<openbot>
but hard
<Arch-TK>
DocScrutinizer05: do you know of anything good which goes cheap second hand which does dual band a [b] g n, or maybe even ac
<DocScrutinizer05>
sorry nope
<Arch-TK>
which I can put ddwrt on or something
<Arch-TK>
oh well, it was worth a try.
<DocScrutinizer05>
a is rare and 'expensive'
<bencoh>
check openwrt/ddwrt wikis first
<Arch-TK>
I've grown used to it, my laptop supports it and my ISP provided router supports it.
<Arch-TK>
but the ISP provided router is locked down and I can't do half the things I would like to be able to do
<Arch-TK>
one of the things is being able to customise the dhcp settings, I guess I could do that by just disabling dhcp and running a server from my 24/7 box.
<openbot>
see i am not the only one who is going crazy
<DocScrutinizer05>
you're the only one who is not _going_ crazy ;-)
<openbot>
god dosent help us we need to help owerselves
<xman>
heh, I had issue too. until I got a router which you can update the firmware with tomato or wddwrt
<openbot>
lol DocScrutinizer05
<DocScrutinizer05>
I got a wrt54g (surprise, eh?) with ddwrt on it. Recently I kicked it out just because I wanted a monster like fritzbox7490
<DocScrutinizer05>
it did a great job for years though
<xman>
I went from isp, semi crap (it had some custom abilities) to an asus ac :). Long term investment.
<openbot>
isp's are terrible all over the world i feel like now
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes
<DocScrutinizer05>
on a slightly bright side: in Germany ISPs must not force locked down proprietary routers on their customers anymore, in a few months
<openbot>
lets burn them with fire :D
<bencoh>
DocScrutinizer05: wow
<DocScrutinizer05>
finally the end of nasty evil TR69
<DocScrutinizer05>
I mean, how much nastier could it get? ISP forcing WLAN config on me
<DocScrutinizer05>
(not on *me* obviously)
<DocScrutinizer05>
but TR69 can do that, plus other nasty things
<xman>
DocScrutinizer05: Please don't tempt the nasty gods …lol
<DocScrutinizer05>
openbot: good luck! @everyone: bbl o/
