Thanks mahem1 for suggesting looking at the Makefile, now I don't have a problem anymore. Apparently the error triggers when I run opam install from inside an emacs term. When I try from outside emacs, it works.

Yeah, from inside the Emacs term weird things can happen like env vars not being set and stuff or it might use sh and not bash.

I didn't any error like that when installing other packages via opam. Would you suggest I open an issue on the tuareg github?

Oh, that's kinda weird then. But really not too surprising. Every project has a different Makefile that needs different settings.

You can open an issue for sure, but I doubt it will be a high-level/important fix for the developers. Especially if you already have it working now.
