how do I find out the precise way that make is invoked by opam? The files /home/fare/.opam/4.06.1/build/camlp4.4.06+1/camlp4-8854-d8a4ae.* don't help that much.

looks like the config.sh includes those double-quotes, that make perfect sense for the shell, but at some later time lead to double-quoting.

Perry: well, it's not the invocation. It's the config.sh being fit for a shell but not for use in Makefile, yes somehow read from the Makefile, then exported as an environment variable, then read from the environment by the shell, which overrides the value from the shell...

As for what the "right" fix is, it depends on the intended usage patterns... which remain undocumented.
